MPH vs RPM

I have a 1985 280SL Euro with and automatic transmission. The owner's manual states that the trans is a 4 speed. When I drive it shifts twice. I usually run 40MPH at 2,000RPM and it will not shift further. Seems like a really high RPM to get 70MPH. Is this unusual? Do I have a transmission problem?

The transmission will not shift further. Perhaps the transmission is designed to start in second gear and shift twice to third and fourth gear and 2,000RPM and 40MPH is normal for this model.
