Towing a R107

Hi Everyone, new member here. Just planning the trip to go pick up my new R107. My father had two of these when I was a kid and now i´m repeating the pattern. with an 85 380SL

I need to take it across country from NY to TX and I´ve been looking at all the alternatives to having it shipped (have quotes from Easy Auto, American Auto Shipping and Montway):

- U-Haul Car dolly
- U-Haul Auto transport
- Driving it myself all those 1,500 miles

However,

Car Dolly:
I´ve been doing some research, and it seems these cars would required the axle to be disconnected. So I´m thinking that´s a no go. Also, don´t want to put 1,500 miles of irregular wear only on the back tires etc.

U-Haul Auto Transport:
for some reason, The U-Haul page says this setup is not recommended for an R107. Would be because of the weight? (please see img attached)

So long story short:
1. Has anybody got any advice here?
2. Has anybody towed on an Auto Transport trailer (that's were all 4 wheels are on the trailer) an R107 for more than 1,000 miles?
3. Would appreciate any recommendations as well as companies whom to rent from around NY and general tips

Kind regards

Viviano

The recommended combination all depends on what you are towing it with. Possible that you were close to or exceeding the tow capability of your vehicle.

Why wouldn’t you want to drive it 1500 miles?

Yes, i think its the Trailer weight + car weight that puts it over my SUV capacity.

Well I´d love to drive it cross country. Car is road worthy and has good service records. But I´m just not sure if it would be the smartest choice.

Well, if U-Haul won’t let you tow it and hiring a cross-country hotshot trucker is too expensive then the 2-4 day drive with hotels is another alternative.

I think if you mathed it out you might come ahead by having somebody just deliver the car for you.

Otherwise, the best way to get to know your new vehicle is to fly there and drive it home. If it’s in good working order and you know this, that’s what I would do.

From: New Orleans Area
2015 E400 Sedan
been a while but I had my new to me car delivered across country; CA to MS.
I think I paid like $500 for it but was 7 years ago.
Came on big 18-wheeler car hauler with bunch of other cars.

Check the auction sites for the listing of transport companies.
I am sure one is less expensive than other for your certain route.

IF you figure your cost of driving there,
Picking up trailer doohickey.
Then driving home.
Hotel rooms, Food, drinks etc.

Can get expensive. Ps I find PENSKE can be cheaper than U-haul and they have a good car trailer - used one 2 years ago for a jeep.

If it will fit, put it on a dolly backwards. Though there may be too much overhang in the rear. That would solve your driveshaft disconnect problem.

Generally not recommended unless steering wheels is mechanically locked to dead straight.
It’s damn near impossible to get a car to
track straight this way, and unsafe if it isn’t.
