Noisy start up

I have an 89 300 SL. It goes great but Im a bit concerned about a clatter at start up. The noise only lasts a couple of seconds. It doesn't happen at a warm start but when the car hasnt been used for several hours.
Am I right to be concerned? Any idea's.

sounds like timing chain.. I would get it checked as it can lead to serious damage.. older sl/slc also had a pollution pump that can make some strange noises,, not sure if that is aplicable to your model tho

'81 380SL/dual cam chain-LT4 vette-Z06 ('03) vette-I need a bigger garage....
I switched over to the dual chain conversion on my '81 380 and eliminated the chain rattle on start up. Of course, I also put in a new oil pump. It is my understanding that there is a valve in the oil pump that maintains prime so that the chain tensioner won't release pressure on chain after shutdown. It could have been a problem there, I don't know.

But in any case, you really need to diagnose and repair before the chain jumps and really does damage.

clatter

If your starter was worked on lately it could be that
it's not properly shimed.

If it's not that I'm afraid look internally
