Starter doesnt dis-engage when cold

My 89 560SL (only when cold) stays engaged for up to a second when I'm cold starting..after the car is warmed up, it starts just fine. Keep in mind, I live up north in colder weather....does this mean I need a whole new starter, or does it just need a good cleaning??? ?THANKS!!!

It sounds as though there may be a slight oil or grease film build up that holds the cog when cold. You might try removing the starter and using brake cleaner on the cog and the ring gear. In any case, you will have the chance to retorque to correct value and make sure it is all aligned properly.
