MBWERKS.COM --> 50HP for $1000??

I was looking at www.mbwerks.com and noticed they offer some sort of package for the 55 cars for $1000 which adds 10% power gains (about 50HP I guess).. Anyon do this on their car? How do they do it? It doesn't appear that they change pulleys or anything else.. Is it bad for the engine?? What about warranty? Can Mercedes service tell the engine has been reprogrammed?

It's a chip tune (I'll ask about it as I'm down there tomorrow getting some wheels for my E55)... not familier w/ the package beyond what I read on the MBWERKS site... but they do refer you to some "legalese" about your warranty. While I've heard otherwise, my thoughts are that if MB service digs hard enough they're going to detect it... the big scary question is... under what circumstances will they?

I'm assuming this is the same problem w/ any package, including the Stage 1 from evosport, and the brabus, lorinser, renntech,etc... 50HP packages.. However, this one from mbwerks appears to be slightly different because it doesn't actually change any physical parts on the vehicle, whereas the packages from other tuners appear to change items like the pulleys...

Actually you can opt for the chip tune w/out the pulley upgrades with most of these packages, resulting in better throttle response (and more HP per claims) as well as a delimited top speed... The whole warranty thing has me at a standstill w/ the issue - perhaps when the car is a year or two old (mine is a 2005) I'll be more open to it...

Hmm..but Mercedes's warranty is for 4 years right? Would it make a difference if it as 2 years or 5 months old?

It's an ECU upgrade for 55's. $999. 10% is hard to believe as most tuners with an ECU upgrade give a 25-35 gain in Horsepower and torque ie. Renntech/Kleemann, etc.

I think it says "up to 10% gain" - and yes, it is possible to get that out of the SL65 engine by software.

My thought is that if something major is going to go wrong it's going to happen earlier rather than later... maybe that's a flawed opinion but it's been my experience that if it's not built right you're going to find out about it in short order.

Suffice to say I really like Randall and MBWerks. Earlier today they installed a Carlsson Lowering Module (pictures soon) and I hope to have them doing some more small electronic stuff next week some time. They have a gorgeous, clean, and organized shop and I've yet to have a issue with them...

How does throttle response improve when you don't install the pulley?

My ECU upgrade has been brilliant and buulit proof. As far as warranty issues go.........MB states that if there is a failure that isn't due to a mod it is covered. As for my ECU........the work is apparently undetectable by the dealer's software.
