Wheels: Five split spokes is getting kinda old

I've got the five-spoke AMG Style III wheels that came with my SL55. I was thinking about upgrading to the AMG Style IVs with five split spokes. The decision got put off when I ran through my rubber and bought new tires. Now I'm good for another 8,000 or 10,000 miles before I need new tires, and before I'll be wanting new wheels.

However, as much as I like the Style IVs, I'm not getting them. They look too much like the split-spoke wheels on my E, and the ones on many other cars (and even trucks!). The final straw occured this morning when I read this week's AutoWeek (the one with the Z06 on the cover). On page 24 there's a pic of the new Impala, with, you guessed it, wheels that have five split spokes.

I really like the mesh wheels from BBS and others, but I don't think they'll look right on an SL, good as they look on BMWs.

I have the 19" AMG split wheels from the SL65 and they look great on the car. They also work very well with PS2's. But I guess to each his own.

Don't get me wrong here. I think they're great-looking wheels. I think they go well with the SL. I just can't get over seeing less-well-done knockoffs of the idea all over town.

Maybe the problem is that the wheels are too good looking, and that's caused everybody and his brother to copy them.

I have two sets of wheels, the 19' AMGs for daily ride and ultra light BBS for track days. Not many like the BBS, but they work for me (I didn't buy them for their looks!). Have attached pictures so you can see for yourselves...

The BBS wheels look purposeful and effective. They are a little jarring on the SL, and I'm not sure why.

Which wheels are those? How much do they weigh?

They are BBS RS-GT wheels.
  • RS 958 (8 1/2 J x 19 H2 ET 32), ~10kg, front
  • RS 961 (9 1/2 J x 19 H2 ET 32), ~11kg, rear
