SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Obsidian black for real?

Obsidian black for real?
Dear chaps, I had originally ordered an obsidian black/berry red leather combination but having surfed a few mb sites, the obsidian black colour on those sites appears slightly greenish. Am I losing it? I realise that colours appear differently on webpages and have been told by my dealer that obisidian black is the proper black with no added hues.
Is there a difference between black opal metallic, obisidian black metallic and the standard black colour? Can someone please reassure me that obsidian black is black black and not green black! Failing which, I may have to swich to brilliant silver metallic/berry red but everybody and their neighbor seems to have that combination already...no offense. I may also drop done the production queue so HELP!!!
Cheers.

Obsidian black is black/black. A few weeks ago I was at my local MB dealer to finalize my order - at which time I had him show me a black Mercedes, parked next to an obsidian black version (S-class/E-class). You only can tell the difference when these two colors are parked next to each other - if you have them separated, you would swear they are the same.
The real benefit of obsidian black is the lack of the "swearls" you can see after caring for a real black beauty - obsidian black won't show the swearls......Everybody at the dealership was convinced that obsidian black is the way to go.
Hope this helps.

I happen to have three Mercedes in black. Obsidian black, pure black (non metallic) and black opal.
Obsidian black is a metallic paint that is actually dark grey-black in the sun. There is no green shade at all. It's a great color for the SL55 and it's a very "hard" paint (practical because it doesn't soften when washing the car and doesn't chip as easily as the black enamel). Put a towel to the black enamel and you might as well start polishing.
The black opal is actually a really blue-black, especially in the sun. Very pretty, but I don't think it's great for a convertible.
I actually ordered the SL55 in pewter because I am getting tired of keeping the car clean for longer than 5 minutes.
The color looked very cool in the Mercedes brochure (at least on the redicuously small sample).
Good luck

Yes, I then specifically chose NOT to order it.
It (a) Makes the silver trim pieces at the side "air intakes" look silly (too much contrast)
and (b) We dont get black leather in the UK, only a dark blacky-grey - and I didnt think that was dark enough. We can order designo black (and pay extra), but I didnt want the extremely soft nappa leather you get then (it marked on my old CLK55).
So I opted for the dark metallic blue (called Tansanite in the UK) with the light grey AMG leater.

Haven's seen that combo, IMO the best color combos for the SL are the Alabaster White / Berry Red Interior or Diamond Silver / Berry Red Interior. I have seen both combos and they both look very sharp!!!

Thanks for your comments chaps. Someone had posted pics from Hong Kong of a black sl55 with berry red leather and I thought to myself....hmm was that what I really wanted? I agree that silver/red leather is simply classic but I wanted a darker exterior to blend in all those grooves caused by the roof mechanism. Maybe obsidian black with a black interior would be best or I could always conform with almost every other SL in town and go with silver with red/black interior. I wonder whether all these changes will cause me to lose my place in the production line. Note to self, contact dealer!

Richard...that is the same combo I was planning for my 55...I love the tanzanite blue...I have on my mclass now...and the lighter interior just makes more sense with a convertable...I also want to get the stone trim...I think it would look better with the Alpaca interior than the aluminum....can't wait to see your car...mine is still 9 months to a year away...

I almost ordered the stone, but my wife didnt like the look of it. I figured I could always replace the aluminuium if I didnt like it, but I do really like it, so thats fine.
I will post pictures once I have the car in the next week or so I hope

I think I would like to see it in the flesh first but I like the pictures I have seen...I think I will probably have to order it after market anyway as it doesn't look like it will be official option here in the US.
Can't wait to see your car! Good luck!
All the best..

Hey....I thought I was the onlyother person who saw green.....I have a 99 CL500 obsidian black and I do notice a slight greenish cast in certain sunlight conditions. If black and obsidian black cars are side by side the obsidian black looks a greyish charcoal to my eye by comparison. I still love my car

chizler,
Thanks for posting the picture, it is a great looking specimen. Be sure to post in the "picture thread". Black Opal looks magnificent on the SL. Where did you get the wheels?

JackStraw thanks I did post the photo in the picture thread. The wheels are Carlsson 1/16 UL (UltraLite) in F9.5X20 and R11X20. They were purchased from Carlsson USA directly and all I can say is that the picture does these wheels no justice. They simply look amazing in real life and even better in motion. Other Carlsson upgrades include electronic suspension lowering module, exhaust, exhaust tips, lighted doorsills. Still pending are a Carlsson front spoiler lip and supercharger/ECU upgrade.
