sl55 or sl600 trying to decide which one to get

im in the market for an sl and i love the looks of the 55 but am a huge fan of turbos
so im leaning toward the 600 but want to hear for you guys
who have more expirience with these cars

i have personal issues with modding cars"just cant stop, need more power" according to my wife

so with the 55 or the 600 i would mod it a little
with the 55 i would do a pully and ecu but no headers
with the 600 just a ecu would do

both cars will be lowered and a set of at least 19'' rims tires

need your help guys its a hard decision to make because the prices are close for 2003-2004 cars

thanks

I have had both. To me it's simple, the 55 is much more sporty due to the lighter weight, suspension and s/c power band. The 600 is smoother, heavier and has some lag. Both of my cars were modded and I liked the 55 much better for it's more sports car like nature. The 55 was much more fun to drive.

i would go with the sl55... the power/performance may be negligable between the two even after mods but the 55 was designed to perform more like a sports car. from the amg shifting trans to the amg calibrated ABC suspension, once you drive each car you can tell the differences. turbos are nice but the 55 can provide you nearly the comfort and refinement of the 600 but also the brute power that anyone who's owned an amg gets addicted to. jmo

Can't you get much more power out of a "modded" 600? Also, I wasn't thinking that there is much difference between the two as far as handling and susspension.

Help me out here........this is the first that I'm hearing about the differences. I'm contemplating the same thing. I wanted an SL600 but, like the looks of the SL55!

The 55 is set up more like a sports car. As far as power goes, neither needs more power. If you want to faster.............take a driver's school at Bondurant or Barber.

sl55 and sl600 are setup different. trans shift programs/maps are different as well the ABC suspension program is different between two. sl55 setup to react quicker than the 600, hence more sportier characteristics.... if you want power but don't care for handling then take the 600 with amg sport package so you have the looks as well.

I went through the same dilemma...both are priced equally so I went with the faster model.

55 if you want a loug growl and sportier suspension, 600 if you want monstruous power and sedan like refinement. Best of luck with you decision.

600, 600, 600...this is what I did with my SL600 with only a RENNTech ecu upgrade and Eisenmann exhaust:

No SL55 can get close to these numbers.

My car is an AMG sport package, so it looks the same (or better) than a 55:

Here's some video of the car in action...enjoy the carnage:
