Just got my Insurance quote from Privilege - no price hike for derestriction.
They do insist on Tracker, Guradian or Protector anti theft devices.
Richard - do you have an AMG price list, or can you point me to one. I am intrugued to know what they need to do to derestrict up to 186.
I really thought it would be a simple lap top connection and parameter swap.
Cheers - Paul

The most common device here is "tracker" , it comes in 3 variants, (a) passive (you phone tracker to tell them your car is gone), (b) active (it has a movement detector) and (c) similar to b but has GPS receiver in it aswell. They are all enabled/talked-to via the UK pager network, and emit a location signal when stolen which all police forces can pick up and track. This can only work in the UK as it uses the UK pager network
The 2nd most common is trackstar - this has a GPS receiver and a GSM phone and can therefore (I presume) work wherever GSM can roam to.
The insurance companies only require the absolute basic tracker, so I guess most people fit that or the one with the movement detector in which is not much more. The GSM ones are considerably more expensive and since all you are doing is to protect the insurance company, I doubt they are fitted that often.
Only the installer and the tracking company know where the units and aerials etc are, so if you were to get hijacked you couldnt tell the hijacker - and I guess the criminals know this fact !!
- morebhp, give AMG in germany a ring ... or drop them an email .. they are pretty responsive

If you look at pictures of the new S class interior, the screen is clearly larger than in the current SL. It would not surprise me if the update to the SL requires changes other than simply swapping out the old and slotting in the new. Nothing in this car is as simple as first appears!

The new COMAND is 16x9 screen, ie new centre console. It doesnt use the D2B fibre ring bus with lots of major units, ie COMAND, AMP, Phone, VCS, CD, but it uses MOST bus, a newer similar bus, but there are "bus controllers", seperate nav units etc etc, so you'll need a bunch of stuff, wiring looms, all kinds of mounting plates etc etc ..
Also, COMAND was full of bugs for its first year of existance, Im sure COMANDII will be equally dodgy :-) The fact that its 6 months late says alot ...

My car seems to be the last one built with the earlier Nokia phone. Should I replace it with the new Nokia 6310?
I plan to use it with Cammand only, as I have dual SIM cards

I wouldnt bother then .. If you are going to use it in the US, or I guess if you need to buy a tri-band for occasional US trips, then Id change it then.
It gives you no extra functionality in car ...
Its a pain to do on the SL, because you have to take out the rear seat to get to the control units which are under the fusebox under the compartment without the CD changer ...

This morning I tried a 6310i on my Command that must have a 6210 controller, since it is the phone tha car came with.
Everything worked fine save for a very low background hiss that was nevertheless disturbing.
I guess it is a matter of impedance.

What s/w version is running on the 6310i you tried (do *#0000#) - you need 4.07 for it to work properly
The 6210 controller installed on my wifes December 2001 ML500 doesnt even recognise the 6310 or 6310i phones
