umbrella ?
As you know ,
SL 55's top can be opened/closed only when the car is stationary.
I use it as a commuter car.
When I drive it with the top down on a busy motor way,
sometimes I become nervous worrying of sudden shower.
But , not to make following drivers angry , I should keep going on , even though with 10-20 km/h ; no place to stop to have
16 seconds for closing the roof.
Under the such kind of circumstances , if I happen to meet sudden shower , should I use an umbrella ?
Or should I carry a big plastic to cover the car?
Or is there any way to modify the open/close function ?
(Maybe this function is connected with the gear shift position.)
Any idea? I would like to open/close the top at any slow speed.

Smile...
I found out that as long as I push the break though the gear
shift is at D postion , I can start opening the top.
Once it starts to open , I don't have to push the break .
I can move the car.
In the morning I tried this with low speed at the parking lot.
Become comfortable.
Maybe closing can be done also. Will try it in the evening.

I find that moderate rain doesn't make it into the cabin if the car is moving.
I certainly would not recommend deploying an umbrella while driving. Aside from you looking completely stupid and a source of ridicule to the millions of Hyundai and Daewoo owners in your country, the umbrella could suck you out, whisk you away into the clouds and leave the SL55 pilotless.
Not even Distronic is going to handle that one.

hehehe..it would be pretty comical if you used an umbrella! LOL! silver SL55 with a bright red umbrella protruding the smooth lines of the SL...
but are you sure its ok to close or open the roof at even slow speeds? will it damage the mechanism in any way?

A berry red umbrella, of course.
The car has to be stationary to start opening or closing the roof. You can drive with it half open/closed but you'd be mad to. You risk damaging the roof. You can just imaging the wind resistance bending something out of alignment.
I went to a technical briefing on the roof in the UK in February and the view was that regular service shops were not to even think about touching the roof if there was anything non-trivial wrong with it. The cars were to go back to MB UK HQ for specialist handling.
They were evidently terrified of the trunk lid colliding with the folding roof, causing expensive damage to both. You can just imaging it happening during development with the folding roof embossing it's shape into the trunk lid because of a control unit software glitch.
They may have loosened that stance with experience of course, but it's clear they were running scared.

Only at slow speed
Today on the road, I started opening of top with pushing break pedal at D position as I explained above . During opening , I
moved the car at the speed more than 10km(I don't remember correctly) .
And the opening job was stopped (the top only half opened),
and front displays totally turned to purple color with warning
message.
This means that at more than certain speed the car does not allow you to move the car with opening/closing the top as blueSL
mentioned.
