SL350 with 6speed Sequentronic
Anybody know when will the SL55 get it?
SL350 at the Paris Motor Show
SL-Class: New six-cylinder sports car with a 245 hp power unit
Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the new SL 350 to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show. Equipped with a further development of the V6 engine with an output of 180 kW/245 hp, this two-seater has excellent credentials for delivering exemplary sports car dynamism: the SL 350 accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and has an (electronically limited) maximum speed of 250 km/h.
As standard equipment Mercedes-Benz has combined this V6 power unit with the automated six-speed transmission SEQUENTRONIC, which is operated from the steering wheel in typical racing car fashion in the SL and therefore permits particularly rapid gearchanges at the touch of a button. Other standard appointments in this six-cylinder SL-Class model include high-tech innovations such as the vario-roof, Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™), an automatic rollover bar, electrically adjustable integral seats, adaptive driver and passenger airbags and large head-thorax side-bags

There are not many cars which provide the sort of torque which the SL55 does and have manual boxes. The problem is maintaining adequate clutch life handling the torque from the engine. The Aston Martin Vanquish had a reputation of eating clutches early in it's life and Ferrari engines tend to be higher revving with lower torque. The higher the torque, the greater the wear as it engages and the greater the tendency to slip.
Mercedes does not in any case excel in their manual boxes, compared to BMW or Porsche and I tend to associate them with the thousands of diesel E classes which are the standard taxis at airports across Europe.
It was once said there will be a 6 speed box for the SL500/55 in a couple of years. The SL350 is going to be pretty sluggish though, heavy car less than half the power of the SL55. I'll pass.

Too Young To Drive
In response to blueSL's post:
Also do keep in mind that the gears in the SL55 AMG's gearbox will be spinning a lot faster and for a lot longer period of time than the MB taxis. So wear and tear may also come from the friction and heat, in addition to the massive torque wrenching motor on a manual gearbox.

i, too, would be interested in the sl350. after the warranty, i'd consider the kleemann tuning (or some other company).
i'd like to see the sequentronic, but i don't know if they're ever going to bring that over to the US.
