2003 sl 55 Navigation

Hey Has anyone upgraded their 2003 sl navigation to the new command system?

There was quite a bit of discussion on this topic a few years back. You could probably find quite a bit of data via search.

If I recall correctly the short summary is, the electronic signaling is completely different so there is no way to interface a newer nav unit to the 2003 Command bus.

People have installed newer, stand-alone nav units in their cars without integrating to the Command bus.

I have a 2005 SL 55 and the navigation on it is absolutely horrible. My Lexus NAV system is WAY better and easier to use. The Tom Tom I got for my wife's Mini Cooper is WAY better as well. I don't know what the NAV is like in the 03 or the 06, but the one in the 05 is a joke for a car this price. I wouldn't pay much to upgrade when a Garmin or Tom Tom is way nicer and easier to use. Plus, you can remove them from the car and plan trips etc. in your house before you go. Just my $.02.

Nope, the d2b/MOST conversion is absolutely HUGE and so not worth it. Just do a conversion to a Pioneer AVIC-Z2. It is light years ahead of all the MB COMMANDs.

I have a car in the detroit area that I may be doing the upgrade on. For a basic install, the comand and amp with related wiring has to be replaced. I am not sure the instrument cluster and steering wheel buttons for audio functions will work or not. On my 03 c, they did not so it required a new cluster and steering wheel airbag.

my plans are right now is to get an 04 and do aftermarket nav...like the Reus. haven't done much research on it yet, but initial looks at it make me think this is the way to go. now all that has to happen is they work in the steering wheel controls.
