But, make no mistake, the multi-spokes are a pain to clean. Washed them again, so many surfaces and mine seem to be coated in grease which attracts brake dust. From a simple practicality point of view, the alternative 5 spokes are attractive.
Looks like I made the right decision. I use "wonder wheels" on the wheels (brush on, wash off) which keeps them excellently clean.

And, I cant beleive how good our October weather is at the moment - Ive had the top down a lot, and I expected (with 1st Sept delivery), that it would have the top up until Feb/March next year

I must say, the SL55 makes me smile everytime I think about driving it, and as Ive said before, its the only car that when you approach traffic lights with a clear road in front, you pray for the lights to go red so that you can experience the acceleration again and again ...)

BlueSL, are you run in yet ?? It just gets better and better ...

Keep the stories coming its the only way I can wait till January for mine. At nite I dream about the car and how sweet its going to be to drive. The great thing about the car is its ability to use it almost year round. Although its a exotic u can still use it for everyday affairs and park it without making a scene every time. Only those who know cars will realize what it is.

No, not run in yet, about 700 miles in 4 glorious days, but I have had the odd brief excursion into "forbidden" territory beyond 4000 rpm.

The way cars recede in the rear-view mirror when you take off is just fantastic. I used to have a taste of that in my SL600 but the effect is more than ever. The performance is so accessible - no smoke, no hot burning clutches, no drama, just relentless urge.

I had plent of fun with this travelling back from Germany up the autobahns. Numerous divvies right up my backside in traffic, bullying and pushing you to move over. Then when the traffic cleared a whiff of throttle and watch them dissapear into the distance behind!!

I have now got about 950 miles on mine. A friend with a ML55 states his AMG engine is noticably faster with 5000 miles under it.

I am getting as many, if not more, people mentioning how great the car is than when I had the Ferrari 360.

Last week it was in to have the UK plates fitted. After completion it was right outside the dealers front door. I came out and was giving it the once over to ensure the plates were fitted level, etc when an old guy said "Are you dreaming lad ? - one day you might have a car like this Eh!", loved telling him "Actually it is mine". Which lead to more complimentary comments.

SL55 50% of Sales and of Manufacture?

Morebhp - You report above that on the factory tour in Bremmen you were told that Mercedes had expected the SL55 to be 25% of sales, but it has proven to be more like 50%. Were you given to understand that Mercedes has altered projected production to meet those sales? Here in the US we are being told that Mercedes is only making something like 500 SL55's world wide. (Over what duration of time is not clear) Is that misinformation based upon what you learned first hand at the factory? Is AMG capable of producing enough of the 55 engines to meet close to 50% of the SL's coming off the line? Did they say how the mix will be apportioned once the SL350 and the Diesel versions start coming off the line in the immediate future? What about the SL600's?

As of right now, are close to half of the SL's coming off the line SL55's? Do you recall the line's maximum capacity and at what level of that maximum the cars are presently being built? Any other details or insights learned from your factory tour are welcomed.

Sorry Northbenz did not get any where near this amount of information. It did seem the produtction line was about 50/50.

I am sure this will drop once they start putting pther engines in - there is only one line. The car takes about 140 hours to assemble.

They had built 120 (but not sure in what time span - this was at about 10:30 in the morning). I beleive they work around the clock 5 or 6 days a week. No cars built on a Sunday (suggested for religeous reasons!)

Didn'y hear anything about the SL600, just the V12 Diesel. Suspect the SL600 will be the Diesel. Who needs a SL600 with the SL55. It is a smooth ***** cat until you hit the throttle.

I think that number that's been put around is just to make the car appear more exclusive than it is for people selling them on ebay. It may refer to the number of SL55s destined for the US this year but not to total world-wide production ever.

My engine no is high 3000's and while that doesn't necessarily indicate how many SL55s they are building, it hints at 6000 - 8000 in a full year. The previous car was built at the rate of 18-20000 a year, so allowing for ramp up, the figures of 30 - 50% SL55 appear reasonable.

I don't get the V12 diesel thing. Never heard of it but the 320 diesel in the S class has been well received and 40% of new cars sold in Europe are diesels. Maybe the guide meant to say a V12 AND a diesel. With the SL55 costing $100 to fill up in the UK, the extra gas mileage of the diesel would be attractive.

Don't think I could build an SL55 in 140 hours, however hard I tried.

BlueSL - there was an article in Autocar about a year ago suggesting that the SL engine line up was to include a diesel and it would be the 400 Cdi. This engine is used in the European left hand drive version of the S class but they substitute the 320 in the right hand drive UK version as the 400 wont fit.

Now you mention it, I do remember it. Makes you wonder if they will have the same problem fitting it into the SL. I don't think a V12 diesel is likely though.

If MB is producing more than 400 cars for the US like I see quoted in the magazines and on this website then why dont they let the general public know. They are sellling them for sticker and making good money but the scumball dealerships are ripping people off based on a lack of inventory.

Very cryptic - It has vague Docklands connotations but nothing more. Don't tell me, you saw a guy in a silver/berry red SL55 and thought it might be me!!

You'll enjoy it. Certainly looks like cars are beginning to flow, I won't say thick and fast, but at least a steady trickle. I suspect the SL55 is redefining the market for £90k cars.
