Sub frame Damage

Hello,

My father recently got into an accident in our 07 sl55. Low speed impact about 10 mph, no airbags, no injuries. To make a long story short, we rear ended a nissan maxima. He was in the middle of the road and we were on the right side and our front left hit his back right. Consequently, The maxima is totalled and we have a huge repair bill. My question is this, our dealer told us the car has sub frame damage and it will need to be replaced. So what exactly is the sub frame and what steps need to be taken to replace it (does the engine need to be dropped?)

Thank you for all your help.

The subframe is the "frame" of the car. Instead of having a metal frame like trucks do, it has a subframe that makes the frame AND the car all one piece, making it a unibody. Unibody explains it all, the body of the car is in with the frame, its all ONE piece.. Subframe damage is no good and that is going to be very expensive to fix, along with everything else you have to pay for. But get it fixed for sure.
