Power for Road Angel

It's a fact of life that the UK is littered with horrible gray boxes all ready to take your picture hence the need to invest in a GPS Camera Locator. 30 mph in this car feels so slow...

Turns out the Road Angel fits well in the space between the speedo and rev counter, attached to the windscreen with rubber suckers and two rubber feet at the back to stop it bouncing around.

Currently, I've got the power connected to the cigar lighter, but would prefer to hard wire. I seem to remember seeing there are power take-off points at a few places in the car - points where it's recommended to connect, rather than just splicing into whatever cables seem appropriate. Does anyone have any experience of this? My dealer is being a bit sniffy about it (as a cover for their ignorance). Ideally, I'd like to route the thin cable along the dash to the door, just a few inches, hidden in the screen vent and then down by the door to underneath the steering wheel. There's bound to be a suitable ground and fused 12v line activated by the ignition but wouldn't it be nice if there was somewhere prepared I could just plug into.

I have both the Morpheous Geodesy and the Road Angel and the Road Angel looks better and is much better made, so the Morpheous will stay in the SL600. The Road Angel manual makes noises about it not working in some Mercedes due to the wind-shield screening the signal. Any experience of this?

Turns out there's something called a "separate wiring harness connection point". The manual claims my dealer will be able to tell me more, we'll see.

I pulled it for a couple of reasons to re-think. I wasn't happy with the quality of the photographs taken in my workshop on a very dull November day with inadequate flash and a flat battery.

More importantly, I'm not over the moon about having it in the car in that position. It's functional, works well but handsome it is not and I think it detracts from the interior design. The problem is the interior is so heavily designed than most anything you can think of looks like a cheap after-market add-on. I had hoped that hiding the power cable would alleviate my concerns but not really.

I'm wondering whether it would pick up the signal if mounted in the glove box, probably not because there's an air bag above it plus a large steel cross member. Graham (LondonLad) had some ideas about remoting the display but whatever approach you take, there's the problem of cables.

So, if any of you guys have ideas, I'd be interested! I'm posting the picture of the thing installed again to promote comment...

Did you see this thread? Must be somebody in the UK who can do the same - neat, effective, keeps the nosy cops, such as those I experienced recently in France, totally in the dark.

Yes, I did see the post where they've hidden the extension display of a Valentine 1 behind the half-silvered rear view mirror. Certainly an interesting solution if you can run the cables back to the"business" end of things.
