It’s bumps in the road that cause it. It’s a light plastic sound and I think as the cabin / boot warms up whatever it is expands slightly and stops.
I’ve checked the bins and emptied the boot of tool kit, jack, wheel brace etc etc.
The roll bar makes no difference up or down. I don’t know about the roof because the rattle is only slight and you wouldn’t hear it with the roof down anyway.
I think it’s probably part of the roof mechanism but I’ve tapped everything in sight and still can’t reproduce it.
Any more ideas would still be appreciated.
I’m up for a meet; a 3-car photo would be good.
Graham.

Check to make sure your cover for the roof in the boot is click locked in place. I noticed a couple of times that I had to push it in to click.
I'm certainly up for a beer......perhaps a Christmas Cruise through some unsuspecting town?
By the way the AMG driving day from MBExperiences has two slots in Dec then closes down till March...I'm waiting till the weather gets better next year.

When the rim comes in, before they put it on the car, check its the same !!
There are two different AMG 5 spoke rims for the SL. The outer edge (the ~1" wide bit that one would damage if you curb it) differs, one is polished, one matches the rest of the wheel.
My SL55 has the ones that are all the same colour. Dealer replaced a damaged wheel (damaged from new), and got the wrong one - they couldnt see the difference - I could, so they checked the part number on the back of the wheel.
I suspect (but I dont know) that they put the one with the polished outer bit on the SL500 - the "wrong" wheel was ordered by looking at the parts catalog and not at the wheel
Cheers

ps. Im happy for a meet up of SL55s !

Let's race past Ferrari and Porsche showrooms.....or even better let's all park outside the Beemer showroom on Park Lane with two fingers in the air!
I'm up for it but where is everyone located? I'm on the Isle of Dogs.
Pauld
p.s. How old are the owners generally....I'm 41

Just as a thought...for those that haven't attended the AMG MB Driving Experience thing....anyone fancy all of us booking a date in March now? If we all book now we're more likely to get slots on the same day before more AMG's are shipped.

Here is the kind of repair that is possible to do even yourself if you wanted to. I can't find the close-up of the damage, but it is very similar to your pic, but significantly smaller in size:

Would be up for a meet depenfing on date. The AMG date would be fun (although I've already had the free day), and local for me - Mira.

Justin, great results on your wheel. Mine had severe corrosion being a magnesium alloy. This was result of driving just 100 miles on heavily salted roads. The Ferrari never goes out in winter now.
As for a UK meet, sounds a great idea, do we do it soon, before winter, or do we wait for spring? Sounds like we need a good photo op place to meet, maybe some driving opportunity and a decent pub for lunch... Mid-way for all of us would be somewhere central in England, like Bucks, or Oxfordshire. Milton Keynes? Blenheim Palace? Rockingham circuit?
