Didn't see that trailed, my Tivo stopped recording on time and Top Gear always overruns.

Is SL55 AMG valid? I thought it would only be in 2005... I tried to find S155 AMG for mine but no luck, was outbid at an auction for 55 OO, so settled with V8 ... for £399.

would it be a fair guess that you work in a technology business?

Hmm, anyone have a tivo and a network card? Tivo records in mpeg, and so you could..ahem...distribute it to those unfortunate souls on this side of the pond.

My cover is blown! Yes, software....

Haven't got around to networking my Tivo yet, but there's bound to be something on it on the web-site www.bbc.co.uk/topgear

Looking at the colour of the car (the press cars I have seen to date are Jasper and Silver) I belive this is Jeremy Clarksons personal car they are testing!

See if it is abused as badly as he did the Bentley last night.

Suspect the plate was a fake for the track only.

Looking forward to his 'unbiased' review.

Yikes. I have a Tivo aswell, and am in technology business ... Ive got Sky Plus arriving aswell since I need a 1 box solution in the lounge. But then I work for 2 technology businesses, so I guess I'm allowed two such boxes.

I wonder if there is anyone out there with Tivo who isnt in technology. I have a horrible feeling the answer is no - i.e non technology people with pvr use Sky Plus.

Seriously off topic but Tivo = Personal Video Recorder = Hard Disk recorder which learns your viewing preferences and records, for example, every instance of a program. I've got mine setup so that Top Gear records without me having to check the schedules. Also allows you to pause/rewind live TV. Only available in the US and UK.

Interesting ... I am peripherally in the technology industry (by being a professional investor in tech stocks) and own a couple Replay TV boxes, which are Tivo’s primary competitor. I have always been amazed they haven’t caught on more with the general public.

I take it Top Gear is an automotive review show in the UK. Please let us in the USA know what they thought of the SL55!

To answer the other two questions not answered. Here in the UK we have 5 types of TV transmission
(a) Analogue terresterial. Ie you have an aerial on your house.
- this has been around for years and covers (basically) all of
the country very well. Gives you 5 channels in most places, some
places are hard to receive "channel 5". Everyone has this.
(b) Cable - reasonable coverage in city centers, but outside of
city centres the coverage is weak. Usually combined with a phone service (ie, Cable TV + cheap(er) phone calls
(c) Digital terresterial. Used to be a pay service, now free. About 30 channels but missing the two important channels that show the US series (friends, startrek etc etc) early, and no movie channels
(d) SKY - digital satellite , by far the winner in digital TV, supports Pay movies, Pay channels, they have their own PVR (called Sky Plus) if you want to pay extra for it.
(e) Analogue satellite, - i.e you can point your dish at other satellites and pick up other free-to-air (no cost) channels - tiny
percentage of market share compared to Sky.

Cheers

Top Gear is a one hour programme on Sunday nights on BBC dedicated to car nuts here - fronted by the extremely irreverent and highly non-PC Jeremy Clarkson, a 6'05" SL55 owner & unabashed Mercedes-Benz proponent, who some believe should be Prime Minister. Last sunday's programme featured the Maybach (driven sedately at 180 mph) and a Bentley Mulsanne, which Clarkson beat up mercilessly in the full view of 8 Million of the proleteriat..........

Where is Tiff, the way clarkson launched the Murialego? Lamborghini was a disgrace.

Bring back the Tiff.

"Tiff" Needell has moved on to other channels, but still writes for magazines & makes videos. Tiff was a one time GP driver - better informed as a driver & much less commercially & bloody minded as a presenter. He was part of Lamborghini's abortive attempt at Group C racing, and was a Chevron B41 series driver at one stage.

Clarkson couldn't fit into the Murcielago, and I don't think Lambo's being made by Audi enamoured the brand to Clarkson's apparent masters (MB). Still wonder if his SL55 was free as he certainly seemed to miss the Q....

I can't seem to be able to get anything from the BBC web page, one the reviews of the Maybach and other cars, Does this site contain a video gallery. If it does, please shoot the link here. If it doesn't how can a desperate enthusiast get his hands on some vids.

Opinion seems to be that the Maybach is a better car to be driven in than to drive. I think if I turned up in one of those, most people would laugh and think I'd lost it... It's a car for people who take themselves too seriously.

I guess there's quite a few Maybach potentiates that perceive the SL55 AMG as totally ridiculous in today's climate (2 seats, same MPG, no room) and really a car for young wanabees on their way in later life to chaffeur driven M-B's, but at the moment just a few rungs down.

Horses for courses - Maybach's will find clients & already has fanatics.

Bentley & Rolls-Royce have too, despite our supposedly better judgment.

It's a consumer appliance that digitizes a TV signal into MPEG-2 and records it on a hard disk drive. It's easy to use because it gets program listings over the internet. It can record programs based on time and channel or keyword search. Watching live TV through it you can pause if there is an interruption, restart and watch the signal with a delay and then catch up to live programming by skipping commercials. A great invention which has been slow to take off because it is hard to explain in an advertisement.
