I dunno guys:

Sprins, I thought exactly the same!

Never seen such ugly headrests, perhaps an homage to ET!

Amazing how the Germans are not taking their inspiration from the beauty of nature, or the brute power of the machine...but from a friggin tree-hugging, heart glowing, transvestite alien.

Horrible....

Just awful.
NO thought towards the evolution of the current design.
After this refresh tanks in sales, hopefully Mercedes Benz can redeem itself with the new SL.
The headrests are particularly horrible - especially when viewed from the rear.
What happened to smooth, clean integration of the airscarf like in the SLK??

The Hood is the WORST

As far as the front end goes... It makes perfect sense cause it's exactly what they did to all the other classes...

Ohhh Wait... I just saw the side vents... Maybe they are the worst!

Best,

MB really needs to have people on the forums to see the kind of responses that the new designs get. Lately, every other car gets great design reviews, but this is just getting SLAMMED.

Actually everything gets slammed. No shortage of opinions on design. Remeber when the Bangle butt appeared?

The best way we can show them what we like is to buy what we like and pass on what we don't.

They will get the message if the new SL doesnt sell and the redesign will come earlier.....

Problem is that forums are the minority. What percentage of owners do you think 20 - 30 forums commenters represent of the total SL sales?

Just my .02

If the people that love the cars hates the 2009's do you really thing a new buyer or an existing owner that is not a forum person would like them? Sales will suck big time. This was a gov't dictated change and it hurt the looks of the car and this car gets the big bucks because it is beautiful otherwise we would all buy Lexus.

Hans is drinking his own Kool-Aid

"Its predecessor was very rounded and defensive," says Hans-Dieter Futschik, Mercedes-Benz's director of design. "I wouldn't call it aggressive, but the car shows a bit more pride now. Mercedes' new models are sharper than before, with clearer, defined surfaces, and this is a character that we wanted to introduce to the SL. The new design language is so different, so we had to change the hood and the fenders."

He could of just said they wanted to make it look like ***!!! But they want to sell these ugly cars so they make it sound like it is some great new direction not a gov't mandate. Corp. BS speak

We still have not seen the AMG version other than one rear shot.

They have a habit of looking a bit better than the regular ones.

I will reserve judgement until I see the car in person.

The CL was met with the exact same reaction and it was a full redesign.

We are all just the early commenters looking for any information and jumping on every picture.....

I do hope the seats can be ordered without ET's head. They added airscarf without changing the seats....

I read a post on another forum of someone who has seen it in person (his friend has one) and he wrote, "Guys, it looks much better in person." I am sure it will look better in person and it is just a matter of everyone getting use to this change. It is a big change for us devotees and I am one of the biggest. I can't say I loved the new one immediately when I saw the pictures this week, but every day I look at these pictures I am starting to really like this updated look. I have a friend who went through a similar ordeal with the S-class last year. Now when he sees the 2005 S-class on the street, he is so happy he upgraded to this new style. He loves his new car now and wouldn't go back. Once these new SLs start multiplying on the street, our current models are going to look dated, still beautiful, but dated. And, that is ok. The look will just be a classic Mercedes.

Regarding the AMG, I am sure this has been posted somewhere in this forum, but I was looking at these videos last night: http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...o-ar50208.html This is the new SL63AMG. I don't see many differences in this new AMG from the standard new SL, although maybe there are others on this forum who can spot the changes. I am curious to know how someone can tell the difference between a 63 and a 65?? Why couldn't these videos be a 65? Anyway, this car sounds very cool. I have a 63 on order, but I am on the fence until I see it in person.

The airscarf is part of premium package 1, but so is keyless go, trunk closer (I think), and ventilated seats. There are four options to the premium package. So, there must be regular headrests available for those people who don't get this premium package 1 (although I think everyone will get it). I am wondering if it is possible to switch the new airscarves out for the standard headrests. That would be a simple fix, if it is simple to do. There must be power cords sticking out and I worry most about matching the leathers. I wish they wouldn't have incorporated airscarves into the premium package. I have never had the need for them, nor will I ever use them.

Fair points....a base CL550/600 is still an incredibly ugly car in pics/live...but IMO CL63 030 is best-looking car today....amazing what AMG perf jewelry can do...

IMO, SL styling will likely be tolerable (or better) w/full AMG and 030 jewelry....what really irks me is the lack of CL-level tech, like the sport seats or DistPlus/BrakeAssist/BSA...or upgraded/modernized interior finishes/ergonomics....hopefully, the steering precision/brake pedal feel/gearbox speed and downshift blips, etc/exhaust note will be where SL63 030 beats the CL63 030 in driving precision/pleasure...

On SL63, apparently AirScarf is incld in P1 package, so effectively can't get car w/o the POS....but 030 is avail on early builds (even late Mar).....am undecided as to whether to take car until I see/test-drive my spec'd copy in ?May....and will vote w/my dollars, as you aptly suggested....

Can you have an item removed from a premium package?? In other words, can I have the airscarves taken off my P1 package??

I've asked, but answer now is "no"....

But suspect if enough guys request that deletion...and, if AMG US is actually interested in maximizing sales/profits in today's difficult high-end economy, they may respond to preferences of paying customers....let's hope capitalist logic prevails....

That will be too late for the cars we have on order. They wouldn't make that change until next year. And, to give up the P1 package means giving up the ventilated seats, keyless go, and trunk closer. Items I will use. It is the airscarf that I don't need, don't want, and don't like.

I find it hard ot believe that his friend HAS one. An AMG? It hasn't even been shown yet. The standard model pictures were just release a couple of weeks ago. We need to see some real life pictures then.
