purchasing 2003 SL55 amg

I am considering a 2003 SL55 AMG with 60,000 miles on it. As I inspect this car, what are the things to look for?

I know about the supercharger chirp. Any other common things to watch out for?

Thanks for your advice.

Hi, Compaq. Welcome to the forum.

One of the bigger ones to look out for is leaky hydraulics in the ABC system. If the car lowers over a short period of time (e.g. a few hours or overnight) AND leaves a puddle of hydraulic fluid, it has a leak. That's a fairly expensive repair.

If the car is using the original intercooler pump, it's on borrowed time and will likely need to be replaced shortly. Fortunately that's much less expensive and can be a DIY job.

You might be also be nearing end of life on the rotors. If that happens, it's an opportunity to upgrade to the lighter VRP or Evosport rotors.

Can't think of anything else at this point. You might also ask the same question on the E55 forum. They're quite a few more active E55 guys than SL55 guys and the cars share a lot of components.

Enjoy the ride! It's a great car!

We have not had ANY problems with our '03 SL55. Other than "hanging on" when you put your foot into it, the thing is a Hoot to drive. We're are pretty much staying at 18-22 mpg using middle grade gas. And before the hooting starts, there was an article by Frank King in The Star years ago that indicated that the computers adjusted to the Octane very well and there was no need to worry. Of course MB jumped all over him and he did a slight retraction the following quarter, but still held to his guns on the issue. I have pretty much used middle grade since then in all of the MBZ's I owned with only a slight noticable dip in horsepower, primarily when going uphill.

Car Whore
Don't see the point in using middle grade gas, the $5 difference in your total bill really worth the hassle and risk?

I was the first guy on the block with an SL55, and it has been a brilliant car.

I have used it as the basis of our 55K tuning. Tracked it. Found the top speed. ....and generally have had a blast with it.

The only failures I have had are tire pressure monitors, and IC pump and an AC compressor. ...... and a few sets of tires!

Look for the best car you can afford and have fun!
