The message above is displayed when I try to lower the top on my 03 SL55, even though the luggage cover is closed.. At the same time, my automatic trunk closer has stopped working. I know there is a micro switch on the passenger side of the luggage cover, and I can hear it click when I close the luggage cover. Is it possible that the switch is bad, and that the two problems are related?
Thanks.

There must be more going on since the boot closer should work no matter if the luggage cover is closed or not. But I don't believe in coincidences, so most likely the problem is related, but not limited to, that micro switch.

Off to the dealers workplace!

My 03 SL500 had same problem. Trunk "soft close" didn't work -- when I shut lid it would suck down and then pop up again. Had to close it 12-15x and eventually disconnect and reconnect battery. Dealer installed a new trunk switch activator (I think that's what it was called). Expensive. Trunk closes now but still getting the Close Trunk Separator message when I try to open top. Still plugging away on that one.

Two separate issues.

The boot separator switch can be tested for continuity when clOsed with simple ohm meter. Some times Ou just need to wiggle the separator when in place to have the switch close.

The trunk soft close does not work when you lose vacuum/ pressure usually in the trunk closer assembly located in the trunk lid. As i mentioned in another thread ignore that Problem for a while (and keep resetting vacuum/ pressure pump) and you will need both a new assembly and pump. $$$$

Have you ever replaced the trunk struts? Mine were extremely stiff when I first got the car and I had to slam the boot. It still closed with the auto top though.

When I had the struts replaced, the boot lid closed effortlessly.

After SEVERAL trips to the mechanic, and a few THOUSAND dollars of GUESSING at the problem, I finally took my car to a new mechanic and am completely baffled at how the previous people are still in business.

Turns out in my car, perhaps in all our R230's, there is no computer code for "Convertible top pump is not responding/dead" so instead the display picks a random code for the trunk or top. This guy replaced the pump and for a week I have not had any problems whatsoever.
