20" Auto Couture Insignia's on my 06 SL55?

I'm ready to place and order for 20" Auto Couture Insignia's w/ Pirrelli's on my 06 SL55, question is I live in CT with roads that are in pretty bad shape! I was all set to order today and @ the Mercedes Dealeship AMG Head Tech said he see's alot of 3 piece 20" Rims come in bent ? I ran this comment by tire dealer and said I run a risk with this setup and now I'm thinking about going w/19"s. I notice a couple memebers live in NY City! well if 20"s survive that mess, I'm straight. How bout' some help. this is almost a $6K mod. Thanks. Stock rims just don't look right!

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
I've run stock, 19's, and 20's....

and generally, (though not abosolutely), what will bend a 20, will bend a 19 or even an 18. If you haven't been down the big wheel road before, you just have to take into account the reasonably cautious driving style that will keep these wheels round. If you're going to throw caution to the wind, or run tires that are not reasonably compliant (cheap, or ultra performance), then you're probably going to bend something sooner or later. I love the look of my 20's on my SL, with the Pilot Sports they ride surprisingly well, even at the low ride height. Just my .02....

go with 20z all the way ..... 19z will look very small and ur car will look way to low if u ever have to lower it . 20z is perfect and it will take u 1 month to get used to bigger wheels .

put it this way ......the stock wheels are the best if u want pure proformance out of this car . 20z will make it feel like somethings holding it back abit . After getting used to it ... it will feel just as powerful again .

goodluck and enjoy the mod

This is true, if you get cheap heavy knockoffs.

If you go with performance forged wheels like HRE, you'll be better off then stock.

With such a small sidewall on the 20s, aren't the tires just like bricks? I find it hard to believe the car can hook up as well with 20" rims as it can with 18" rims, but I could be wrong.

20's will bend. Don't care what brand and how forged they are. Large rim low profile tire in NY is always a bad combo. I have many small dents on my rims and they are only 19". If you drive cautious then they will last a little longer but pothole can sneak up on you.
