SL65 Questions

Love the car and potential with a tune, not to happy with the prices people pay for brake jobs and general parts for the car. Does anybody work on their own 65. What is the cost for coil packs and how hard is this car to work on for basic maintenance?. I would like to change my own spark plugs, do my own brake jobs...
My only experience with Mercedes engines is with my SRT6 which is a AMG six cylinder. I've changed the plugs to cooler ones, then installed LET's thermostat, 181 pulley, Heat exchanger,CM30 johnson pump, SL-55 air boxes and Jerry's tune.
Is the SL55 alot easier to work on then the 65 because it's a V-8?? My goal was an 11 second car that was comfortable with great road manners and quiet. I already own a 2002 Viper and sold my 65 Backdraft cobra two years ago, so I didn't want to go that route again, but the v12 in the SL65 has me worried. Thanks, Dave

I believe that we spoke on the phone a few days ago...

I was meaning to get back with you, but I could not find your number.

I looked on my disc and it looks like there is just one large coil pack per side.

Feel free to give me a call..... 602-430-6671

Real Cars
Dave,

Cost of parts is high, even with online discounts. The most mundane DIY jobs are also, complicated by the amount of electronics on the car. You cannot bleed the brakes on this car without expensive equipment and even changing pads/rotors means disabling numerous systems.

The price of entry for the SL65 has come down significantly, but not the cost of maintaining it, and it is simply not a friendly DIY kind of car. Be forewarned that the price of entry does NOT reflect the true cost of ownership. The cost of ownership on these cars remains consistent with their original prices, not their current rates.

It is however, one of the best roadsters money can buy

Throw out whatever price you BUY the car for, it still MSRP'd for $180,000. That means parts of a relative price, no? Buy a $200,000 Ferrari for $80,000, and you still pay Ferrari prices for parts. That's basic math.
