SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Does the TV work in the USA?

Does the TV work in the USA?
.............I just wanted to formally ask US SL55 owners if the TV function works in their car as is. When you pick up the car, does the Tv work, or do you still have to do things yourself to get it working.
................Secondly, if the TV works, does it work while you are driving?

Actually on the US Spec COMAND units, the TV programing is not even in the US Software. Hitting the BLANK button that usually says "TV" in other parts of the world does nothing. The US software doesn't even know that button exists.

The TV tuner is not offered in the US - different TV standards - so although there's a TV button on COMMAND, all you get is a message to say not installed.
.................this has nothing to do with PAl/SECAM/NTSC. The current MB TV tunners are multi-signal capable. Also, the Comand in US cars DOES NOT have a TV button. you can easily attach a TV tunner to the Comand unit and via star disgnosis, enable the blank button to become the TV button and also enable the Tv to work while you are driving. Everything you said in your post is incorrect. I don't know where you are getting your info from. I am honestly looking for accurate info, so if you don't know...........no problem but don't mislead. The issue centers around whether or not in US 2003 Mb's can the SL55 be ordered with the TV tunner option and can it still be made to work while the car is in motion as was the case for the pre-2003 model cars. Specifically, does the problem lie in the US Comand units or in the Star diagnosis software.

Incorrect? I don't see it listed on any "build your own", for the SL, CL or S Class. I think you can conclude from the lack of response from US SL owners that nobody has installed a TV tuner.
I enquired at my dealer about retro-fitting the tuner and they tell me it's not just a case of plugging in a new board. In the SL, a new wiring loom is required which involves major surgery. They told me the last one they retrofitted cost about $3200...
The message is clear, if you think you might ever want a TV in your SL, get the Boys in Bremen to do it for you while the car is being made.

..........If you are going to the dealer and asking them about how to retrofit your car with a TV tunner means that you are not very knowledgeable about this topic and it would be nice if you resist the urge to comment on it. I think someone has already removed your original comments.

Actually, it was me who deleted my original contributions, not wishing to participate in a thread with an anally retentive know-all. Then, for the benefit of other members who may want to look at installing a TV tuner, I just reported what my dealer had told me, bearing in mind they did one the week before Christmas.

If the question is whether the TV tuner can be ordered as an option in the U.S. for a new SL 55, I can tell you that it could not be as of a few months ago, when I ordered my car. I ordered every available option (except the extra navigation CD's), and I am certain that the TV tuner was not one of them.

TV Tuner in US Cars
Hi!
I am new to the group and have an SL55 on order which should be delivered to me in about 6 months. Will AMG in Affalterbach do any modifications to your car once you have picked it up from MB in Europe? Is there a list of modifications that they do? Any help would be appreciated.

I've heard things from you can have AMG custom tune the car, down to a simple de-restriction. Your best bet is to call them, or ask the factory rep in germany.

...............Yes that was the question. As far as what to do afterwards to get TV, I am quite familiar with that. Thanks.

Ted,
The TV will shut off once you are going a certain speed...around 5-7 mph, obviously for safety reasons. But this can be removed by the dealer (most will not do it).
J1013,
From what I have read on another forum, AMG no longer do aftermarket modifications.

Some answers...
Here are some answers that may clear things up...
In the U.S. there is no TV option available in the front, from the factory for any car. I believe having any sort of TV or DVD player within view of the driver while moving, is illegal. There are aftermarket screens and tuners that you can get installed, however screens in the front are not allowed to be viewable while the car is in motion.
If you still want a TV, www.nav-tv.com might have what you are looking for. If you go to their website or call them up, they might be able to help you out. Also, you will be able to set it up so you CAN watch the TV while driving... but this is not legal.
