SBC Pump Failure
The SBC pump in my 03 SL55 (22,000 miles) began making a loud buzzing sound today when I was putting the car in the garage. It would not stop when the ignition was turned off, and the only way to make it stop was to disconnect the battery in the trunk. When you re-connect the battery the noises starts again. I am presuming the SBC pump has gone bad, but I did a search on the forum and could find no mention of this particular symptom.
I would appreciate any other thoghts on this.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I believe all SBC related problems have extended warranties on them (10years). Might want to take it to the stealer.

Turns out it was a faulty "secondary air injection pump" which is located in the same vicinity of the SBC pump. It took a while to diagnose since it (naturally) quit making the noise as soon as it arrived at the dealership. Cost was $779.00 of which all but $100.00 was covered by my Daimler/Chrysler extended warranty.

My SL55 lost all its brakes a few months back - the SBC control unit had just died. Mercedes paid for everything, including recovery.
Seems clear SBC is a problemmatic system, the least they can do is pay for it when it dies.

AMG SL 55
I feel like an idiot opening an old thread. But what side is the sbc pump on becuase I am getting a fan like whine coming from the passenger side part of the engine bay I also smelt metalic type smell and some smoke coming from there. This happened when the car was turned off. Any one think i failed SBC pump or the secondary air injection pump is the source of my noise?

Sounds like Secondary Air Pump. Its on the Passenger Side. To get to it you would need to pull the tire. One trick to get it to stop is to pull the relay thats located in the fuse box on the passenger side. Its over by the hood hinge. You should have a fuse diagram in your tool kit.
My 05 SL55 did this a few weeks back. Its a common problem and there is a RECALL on this issue for ALL AMG`s. The fix was to reprogram your ECU and replace the Relay I mentioned. If this is your problem you will get a CE light as well within a few start ups. I think its P0410 Error if you have a scanner.
The pump is supposed to just come on for the first 30 Seconds when the engine is cold to assist in reducing Hydrocarbon emission and helping the cats come to temp quicker. It wont effect performance if it has failed.
My car is out of warranty and hopefully MBZ will pick it up on my next service. And since its part of the emission system and is a documented recall. I would be surprised if they dont.
Do some "searches" on the secondary air pump and you should see several posts on this issue.
