Limited Slip Differential (LSD) with the 030 competition package

Hi all,

I wanted to have your feedback/opinion on the limited slip differential that comes with the rare 030 competition package on the SL55.

Since the 030 package includes the LSD, does this mean that a SL55 without the 030 package does not come with a limited slip differential?

How does the LSD change the ride in the SL55? Is it better? Worse? Any noticeable change in anyway: cornering, acceleration, braking, safety, etc?

How does the ride of a SL55 with LSD compare to a ride without?

How does the LSD affect the (every day) drive?

Any detail helps even if it may seem insignificant!

Thanks all for your time

- Hovy

ps: 4ociousE55: Since, I know you have the 030 package on your SL55, I was gonna PM you this msg but decided to have a general thread to share all the info I get back

Hey Hovy,

Good questions. This is my first SL so I can't speak from previous experience. However, I do have a slighly modified 05 E55 without LSD and my modified 04 CLK55 did not have it either. Based upon my sometimes (by myself) aggressive driving style I have been able to break the rear ends loose (scary in an E55) on both cars whereas I have not been able to do the same with my SL. I attribute that to the LSD and the 19" tires.

Yes, as you suspect the non-030 SL55s leave the factory without an LSD. Some folks add aftermarket LSDs. For example, I've added a Quaife LSD to my car.

During "normal" driving the LSD isn't noticeable. It's most helpful when accelerating hard out of a corner. There's a bit of disagreement on whether it significantly affects straight-line acceleration, so don't expect to see night-and-day differences in those conditions.

Hope that helps...

One of the nice features of he LSD is that ESP becomes less intrusive since the rear wheels can't spin independently anymore (which immediately triggers ESP). The traction control will allow for a bit of spinning and gliding.

The traction improvement in corners, but also straight line, is very noticable. I had my AMG (30%) LSD installed halfway ownership and the difference is one of the mayor improvments I made to my SL55.
