SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Removed Thermostat ( An Experiment )
I live in the south and the weather has finally warmed up to the 80's and figured now is a good time. I pulled out the thermostat today and drove the car around for a while. Here is what I observed.
-Coolant temps moved up slowly until they got to about 78 C (172 F) but that was at idle.
-Coolant temps stayed around 70 C ( 158 F ) while driving at 25-40mph. I did not get a chance to get on the freeway
-No CEL
-Left exhaust pipe had a lot of white smoke right from the start but right pipe was fine. Anyone thinking its a head gasket can forget it. The white smoke was there within 30 sec. of starting and water temps were very low.
-Because of that I parked it and did not get a chance to drive it more.
-I have not put back the t-stat yet. Want to play with it a little more.
Any thoughts as to what might have happened?
I'll try to keep those of you with v12tt posted on this project. The thermostat is very different than any I have seen. I'm thinking of swapping out the wax pellet chamber from a 160 stat (one with similiar dimensions) and swapping it into this t-stat but I need to be careful not to damage the oe t-stat because I dont think u can just buy it by itself. I think it comes with the housing only.
