SL55 AMG
After looking at the options the M3 cabrio hardtop is not a bad choice; Audi RS4 or RS6 are great choices (don't know if they come in a vert)...The bently vert is great also if $$$ is not a concern (same goes for the Ferrari which has gobs of power a beautiful engine song)...but after it all for what you're looking for; in terms of space, performance, value, reliabilty, fun to drive...everything all in one...the clk63 AMG fits perfectly!

Had a Boxster S when they first came out and loved it. Moved to a Carrera 4 Cab in 2004 for the backseat as my kids always complained that only one could take a ride at a time. Eventually found that the backseat in a 911 is just not acceptable for any period of time - even for kids. Especially with the Cab, you will find that the backseats are even tilted slightly forward at the top due to space limitations with the folding top and engine in the rear.
If you really would like a sports car with a backseat, would not recommend the 911 for any passenger out of a car seat.....

The new M3 vert is too damn heavy...it'll seem really slow after a top if the line AMG. M6 vert suffers from the same issue...weighs 500lbs more than the M5 sedan.
If I were going vert I'd stick to the SL, though the 997 verts apparently handle well, though I'll admit to having not tried them firsthand...

I went to test drive a m6 convert today and I think that will be my next car. Now I just have to haggle the price.

aha funny... im in the same situation as you... which im looking at m6 converts too, not to mention i wont have kids anytime soon, but i'd love to have a 997 cab if it didnt cost so much more, so i think ill be settling for m6 convert soon since i must have a convertible as my next car. just trying to make my choice of buying a 08 updated model, or save some money and buy 07 06 models
