I have an '03 SL55 w/40K Miles. There is a clacking noise that sounds like an idling diesel that is clearly heard at start-up with or without the AC switch on. Can't hear it while driving due to road noise.
Tech "thinks" the problem is a bad AC Clutch which is not covered under my extended MB Warranty.
Any other ideas as to how to isolate this problem and what to do about it?

Does the noise go away when you hit the "zero" button?
You can try pulling the serpentine belt as well and see if the noise is still there.
P.S., I'm pretty sure your sl55 uses a variable a/c compressor which means that you don't have a compressor clutch. If you find that its your a/c compressor, you'll need to replace the whole compressor.
