surge protection when cutting off muffler??
when you guys cut off your mufflers and welded in straight pipes did you need to use a surge protector for the car's computor?? my mufflers have a ground strap welded to them and the shop said they would need to use a surge protector before they could weld on to the exhaust pipe does that sound right, what did you guys do? Pat.

I never had that problem yet, but you can unplug the O2 sensors and you should be good to go.

as a good rule of thumb anytime you're doing any welding or cutting (sparks flying) on modern car it's good to strap one of those things on the battery. most body shops have and use them... they prevent the arcing and voltage spikes from messing up your car's ecu/control modules/sentsitive electronic components.
now will your car be fine without it? maybe... but let's just put it this way, I wouldn't do any work my basic r129 sl without one... how would you feel about potentially frying an ecu on a $100k+ amg with all its fancy electronics?
you can probably get by without using one, but it's def not worth the risk.
