Tire size question

I know there's been a lot of threads about tire sizes on here. But in my search, it seems like there are so many different setups that people are running.

We all know that the OEM setup for the SL600 is 255/40/18 and 285/35/18 although I'm not sure the width of the OEM wheels. Here's my question(s):

I have a set of 19X8.5/19X9.5 VIP Modular wheels that were on my E500. Assuming they fit my SL (might need spacers **yuck**) what tire sizes are you guys running on 19's? I know the correct sizes should be 255/35/19 and 285/30/19 to keep the rolling diameter the same, but is anyone running 255/40/19 and 285/35/19 to get some more rubber under the car? I know the speedometer will be off, exponentially at higher speeds, but the last thing I want to do is kill the ride.

Also, on a 9.5" rear, what's the maximum width tire I can run? I know I can fit some fat rubber on the rear of the car, but my problem is the 9.5" wheel, whereas a lot of you guys are running 10"-11" rears.

Supposedly, you can't run 255/40 fronts since it will contact lower perch. You can run 245/40, however.

The widest on a 9.5 wheel (safely) is 285. 295's have a seating problem that manifests under load (personal experience).

Benz,

You won't compromise the ride on 19s with the 600. Trust me on that. 600 has the most comfortable ABC setting of the R230s, and can take 19s with almost no side-effects. You cannot run tires that will throw the speedo off because ESP will kick in and you'll have problems. You will be fine running the appropriate sidewall height on the 600.
