Electric exhaust cutouts on my SL600
I've purchased the Quicktime Performance electric cutouts (QTP QTEC50CP) with Y-pipe and new electronic controller. The new controller is a digital potentiometer, replaces the standard toggle switch, and allows you to open the butterflies in 10% increments, rather than the full-open / full-close choices that the toggle switch gives you.
Install will be this Wednesday or Friday, for the MIR event. Cutouts will be installed after the cats and before the mufflers with the controller mounted in the lower center armrest. Installer is fabricating a customer turn-down after the cutout to help with resonance.
Pics to come and hopefully some vids from the MIR event on 12/5

BOR,
With the location of the cutouts you are proposing I think you are wasting your money. I think if you want sound you should just cut your mufflers out. It does make the car louder, but mostly under throttle - at idle it's still as civilized as can be.
I don't know what kind of "personality" you are looking for out of the 600... but I think the V12s sound excellent without mufflers.

Marcus, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who's opinion I value more than yours about these cars, but I'm gonna have to hold judgment until I hear the results. The 600 V12TTs with no mufflers sounds intoxicating, but I love the thought of being able to adjust the rumble, so to speak, with the new digital potentiometer. If my only option was a toggle, then I probably would just chop the cans at the rear, but having the option to go from quiet, to the 'Roar of God', makes me giggle inside. And being a tech junkie, anything that has a cool factor, I must have.
This is one of them.
This is one of them.
I appreciate the confidence. I wish you luck with your cutouts. With the cutouts open, at idle, there will be very little difference in sound. Even at WOT, the stock mufflers do let the car make some noise, but without mufflers the car really does open up it's vocal cords. Remember, cutting the stock mufflers does not mean you are running straight pipes... you have the exhaust housings from the turbochargers which are definitely muffler-like and the catalytic converters in place.
I went from stock 600 to Eisenmann to stock 65 to no mufflers and after all 4 of those setups, the no mufflers I like the best. Plus even the high-quality QTP units do not last forever, and I know a few people who were not happy with how long they withstood heat (hint: not long). I know a lot of people have good results with them though, so take that for what its worth.

Marcus, is 100% right in that as soon as you let off gas or drive normally in (D) the sound is quite civilized & near stock w/muff delete ONLY. If you're after roar of god copy my route Hi-flo cats/ 3" DP's 3" Straight pipes no Muff's (totally controlable sound/roar thru manual shifting or mere thrtl modulation + Zero droan @ any speed)
Good luck w/it & pm me if you need any help

+1 Clayton, you will be let down w/no roar of god after this mod (personally I have no idea how your installer will find space after factory cats? the existing fact H-pipe is already crimped due to space limitations @ this point)

There is actually a little cubby (with heat shielding) after the H-pipe and before the mufflers that these little units will snug up into nicely. They shouldn't hang much, if any, below the oem plumbing. I'll take pics of it on the lift.
When the cutouts are wide open, it should be exactly as if I deleted the mufflers, because the dumps are right before the cans. My thinking, is that if I toss the keys to my wife, or am driving through the hood at 3am, I can close the dumps and come in quiet as a mouse.
But, if I decide I'm not happy with it, they're very easily removed. I'm sure I could resell them for a couple bills and chalk it up to a learning experience.

Well, after receiving the units, they're quite a bit larger than I expected. So, you guys could very well be right as far as how conspicuous these things might be after install. There is that little alcove I mentioned that we were planning on using for the install location, but now I'm not so sure that they'll fit up there. The car goes in tomorrow for this, so we'll take a look before install to see what's what. If it doesn't look doable, they'll get returned and I'll be on the hunt for a set of AMG tips.

Shouldn't you be sucking on a turkey leg, right about now?
Fine, post your stupid opinion. That way, I'll have a retort ready for you for the MIR event.
I really wish I could find a good video clip of what these sound like without mufflers. Akademiks is the only one that has videos, and to me, his car sounds pretty darn loud. I'd really hate to chop the cans and hate it.
Sean and Marcus, you guys don't have any clips?

Very similar but that version has little to no BOV/Diverter Valve noise... I'll try n' make a clip later t'nite (also keep in mind this aggressive note is easily controlled by easing off throttle & driving in D)

As you found out the mudules are bulky. It looked retarded hanging out of the bottom of Jody's car, and sounded just as retarded. When you dump the exhaust that early in the exhaust tract you wount achieve the sound you are looking for. If you take out your current mufflers or replace them you will get the sound you are after.

But, you may be exactly right about them looking unsightly if they're hanging too low. Now, there is a little area right before the mufflers that these should tuck up into nicely. So nicely, that it wouldn't be any lower than the OEM plumbing. I really didn't know that these units were this bulky. So, tomorrow when it's on the lift, if we don't think they'll tuck up tight, I'm pulling the plug on the install and will go the other way.
Who's got a set of tips for me?
Where did Jody's car dump? Right after the primary cats?

I was thinking of using a cutout to have a muffler and no muffler and use 4 tips 2 of which being the straight pipes, but idk if there is room or if it would be worth the several hundred in exhaust shop work.

Cutouts are a no-go, gentlemen. I'm here right now and we're doing the muffler delete instead. Gonna reuse the original tips as suggested.
My installer saw the cutouts and started laughing. Says noway are those gonna tuck up tight.

You can aways change tips latter. We want a full report on your findings after the mod. In car video/sound would be cool also.

I would love someone to make a vid of before and after the muffler delete. This appears to be one of the best options and most cost effective.

Alright boys, you were right. I opted for the muffler delete and honestly, it sounds so bad *** now. This really is what it should've sounded like to begin with. Not too loud, but definitely raw sounding. Bunch of thumbs up on the way home. My wife was behind me in her R500 at a stop light, and I did the whole redneck rev when I was sitting next to a Camaro. She said she was so embarrased to be my wife at that moment.
AWESOME!
The cutouts were $500.00 with another $250 estimate for install
The muffler delete was $125.98
Cutouts get returned tomorrow.

Never apologize for revving that thing, you are doing a service for the rest of community, people should be so lucky to hear such a great sound.
