Shattered Fog Light - Help Please

The glass lens on my 2003 SL55's passenger side fog light is cracked into about 30 pieces. I must have been going really fast when it happened because the glass is at least a full centimeter thick! And the bulb wasn't damaged. It still lights up!

So how long and involved is the fog light replacement process? Does it require removing the entire front bumper? Any pitfalls to watch out for as I attempt it?

And is this the correct fog light? It says R230 Sport Package, so I'm assuming that it will fit the SL55 AMG front bumper:

TIA for any insights.

I'd sue!

Mercedes glass shouldn't break! ;-)

They are a pain to change out, you do it from under the car.
I would go with OEM, the Chinese one most likely not match the other.
Factory foglamps are about $115 anyway.

I had the same thing happen and replaced the lamp myself. My auto mechanical skills end at about changing oil myself. The lamp unit comes out from behind the bumper so no bumper removal is necessary.

Have a look under the car just behind the bumper on the passenger side and in front of the front wheel well. You will see a plastic cover which has to be removed. Once the cover is off, you can see the back of the lamp. If I am not mistaken, there are just two bolts holding the lamp in place. Carefully remove the electrical plug. Mine was a bit frozen in place.

If you can get the car on a lift or at least jack stands, it will be a breeze. I did the job with the ride level at the highest spot only so had to do everything by feel only.

Good luck

Thanks, Cal1. I think I'll give it a shot next weekend. I have some jackstands so hopefully that should make it easier. I'll get an OEM foglight assembly from the stealership if it's only $115. That price surprises me, I would have thought they'd charge at least $200.

You won't need jack stands. I had to replace the passenger side when it was shattered by a rock and I was only doing 45 mph at the time. There are a couple of bolts in at the forward lower edge of the fenderwell liner and a couple more underneath. You lower and slide the cover out of the way. Two more bolts and the fog light assembly drops out.

Here's the part you will need.
