Agreed with Jeff.. $47k is way too much for a 6 year old SL with the older interior/dash.
$40k is more reasonable but I absolutely would need to have the 2005 or better COMMAND system. I've used the one in the 2003 and its frustrating and useless compared to anything in a modern car. It ages the car even more making the interior look & feel alot older than it really is.

Ads like these are what put me in the market for this car:

(dont like the Carfax history)

(even better deal but the Silver/Black combo is still the combo I like the least because of its popularity)
I did find a Silver w/ red interior '05 SL55 in Chicago for $39,999 and thought it was very attractive. But I'd rather be patient, especiallly with the summer half way over and try and find exactly what I want.. for exactly what I want to pay. May look into a few luxury car auctions if possible.. I would have to see the Carfax first and get the VIN so the dealership can give me a preview on what to expect about the vehicle.

I wouldn't own an SL without a warranty. It will cost you over $2,000 if anything breaks on this car.
You should budget $3,000 for the warranty on top of the price you pay for the car.

Oh trust I've heard the horror stories. Even my mom has her '97 SL320 at the dealer now with electrical gremlins that wont go away. Top wont go down or up. Needs to go down to install the hardtop.
$3k for a multi year warranty isnt all that bad.. but I still have to find the car first. If I cant locate what I want in my price range, then I'll look to other options. Which may include leasing something new. For the price of the vehicle though.. the '05 SL55 seems like an awesome deal. Cant think of a better way to spend $40k on a car.
