SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: iPod Solutions for 2005 SL55 (with Navigation/Comand)
There are essentially 3 categories of connection between the iPod and the sound system:
1) Auxilary: Essentially a jack connector that plugs in the iPod hearphone connector. Through this connection, the limitations include the following: Only the sound passes through, no ID3 (titles, etc) is displayed on the Comand system, no remote control from the comand or steering wheel is possible, and no charging of the iPod (to charge, you need to add the flat connector).
2) FM: Typically uses a flat connector for sound pass through and charging. No ID3 or remote control from the Comand system or steering wheel is possible.
3) Flat Connector: This option allows for ID3 pass through, remote control, and charging. This option is also the best solution for audiophiles: The sound quality is much higher than through the Auxiliary or FM connections.
Now, as far as products using the Flat Connector (option 3 above), here is what I have found so far:
Product 1): Mercedes-Benz iPod Integration Kit: Your iPod will sit in the glove box. The flat connection will charge the iPod, allow remote control, and ID3 display on the Comand system. Price is around $300US. Don't forget the cost of install! However, according to my MB dealer, this kit is not available for the 2005 SL55...Not sure about the other models.
Product 2): Dice (Mo-Mercedes-42): Replaces the 6-CD changer to leverage the fiber optic and remote control from the Comand system and steering wheel. Uses the flat connector. Around $500US. http://diceelectronics.com/mercedes-non-navigation.html
What other products exist with the flat connector?
