SRS Light on my SL55 AMG

The SRS light on my SL55 came on and I took it to my Dealer. Car is 2003 with 23,000 miles. I have a platimum extended warranty purchased at the dealer. Diagnostic was performed and the service tech told me that there is a resistence problem with the wiring under the seats.
The seats have to be removed and the repair is not under MB warranty or my extended warranty. Cost is almost $1,000.00. I am very surprised that a saftey issue is not covered under the MB warranty. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is not covered?

I dont know what it says in your warrantee. I would read it. if the srs light is on the air bag system will not work in a wreck.

I just had the same thing. SRS light on my 2003 Sl55 due to wiring problems with the safety belt socket. They had to replace the plug/socket due to, indeed, resistor problems. 1000$ seems steep for this, but you nay have slightly different problems that are more expensive...

Thanks for your replies

Sprins,
So you were not covered under warranty. I thought that with a safety item on the car like the SRS that it would have a longer warranty than 4/50.

Bummer that it's not covered. $1,000 seems pretty tall. You might check with an independent service shop. It's also a pretty simple circuit (wire, plug, heating coil) so a motivated DIY-er could tackle it himself. The hardest part is removing the 100 lb seat...it's a fairly tough dead lift for most folks.

Thanks jmf003

Thanks for the info. Since it has always been serviced by the same dealer and they have been great I will leave it there for this job.
BTW, very nice ride you have. What is the 0-60 time?
I absolutely love my SL55.

Warranty? No man, the car is from okt 2002, after 8 years it's harvest time for the dealerships workplace.

In my case they only changed the plug/socket from the cable. Chair didn't even have to come out. There was a service bulletin on this subject, so it's a common problem.

$1000 is on the high side and if it is exactly as you describe there is a bulletin...the seats do not need to come out, and if I remember the time in the bulletin is 3-4 hours.

Don't know if you have another dealer near by, but you might want to shop around.

I've owned my SL55 for five years now and am still feeling the love!

I don't have a timed 0-60 run but the calculator at this link looks mathematically sound (http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules...?post_id=56813) and it estimates a 0-60 time of 3.26 seconds on my 11.4 second run and a 0-60 time of 3.48 seconds on my 126 MPH run.

However those runs were on dragstrips prepped with VHT so the 0-60 estimates are pretty much a best case scenario. On a normal road surface my car probably runs 0-60 somewhere in the high 3s.

I had this same problem with my '03 SL55. You can buy the connectors from the dealership and swap them yourself. It only requires you to splice 4 wires per seat. This is very easy if you use the solder connectors available from the dealership. The seat removal is not technically required, but would make it easier. I just removed the mounting bolts and propped the seats back with a block of wood so I had room to work under the front of the seat.

For everyone else that did this repair themselves. Did you still have to take the car back to a Mercedes dealer to have the SRS light reset after splicing in the new harness? Or did the light go off by itself when you started the car for the first time after doing the repair? Dealer wants $600 to do this but if all it is is splicing 8 total wires together and pulling the seats, i should be able to do this myself as well!

Unfortunately the SRS light won't reset automatically. You'll need to reset it through Star Diagnostics (AKA DAS).

Yes, the SRS light will need to be reset. I did this with my SDS clone I bought off ebay. I would bet though, that any OBDII code reader/scanner would be able to take care of simply clearing the code, SDS is way more than just a code reader and is almost overkill for clearing a code. If you don't have a code reader, take your car to autozone and have them try to clear it. If it works, you saved yourself $600, if not then you can just take it to the dealership.

Generic obd2 code readers will not clear srs lights. They only read and clear engine and certain powertrain faults.

To clear srs codes you need sds, or a scanner with enhanced European coverage.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the under seat connector? My 03 SL500 has the SRS light on and I’d like to get it resolved.

SRS on E55 W211

I ran into a similar problem with my E55. While trying to clean the passenger front seat, I've raised the seat all the way up. That evening on a drive home SRS light came on with a message on a dash "restraint system malfunction, visit workshop". After going over a speed bump, the light went off, but upon restarting the car came right back on.
Scanned it with iCarsoft when I got home and found a few errors:

Upon inspecting the wires/connectors I didn't notice any obvious culprits. Granted, I didn't remove the seat.

What errors did your scanner pulled?
