Personally I think learning about the car and completing the repairs yourself enhances the ownership enjoyment. I know I am not alone here. Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself. I also believe if you can do repairs yourself it will pay off. Insurance companies are not stupid. They are in business to make money. Sure there are good examples above. However I bet there are more policies out there with fewer claims.

My other problem with insurance is something has to fail to be covered. The problems with these cars are well know. Therefore easy to stay ahead of with preventive repairs. For example, lets say you notice an ABC hose that is wet. Not leaking, not dripping not causing any problems. I would replace the hose because at some point it will fail. With the insurance you have to wait for it to fail. And of course it will fail at the most inconvenient time.

Anyway just my 2 cents.

One more visit to the shop and my warranty would have paid itself off.
That math is way wrong. You paid more than $1150. The correct number is $1000+$4500 = $5500. You cannot exclude the cost of the warranty. So with that in mind, it was a wash for you.

I paid $4500 for the warranty.
I have visited a shop twice and paid deductibles of $500 so total $1000.
So that effectively raises from 4500 to 5500.

They have paid $4350 in repairs. 5500 - 4350 = $1150. That literally means that I'm still $1150 negative. One more visit should pretty much make my warranty equal meaning I broke even. My math is pretty on point

I have had my 2007 SL65 for just over a year. Paid $5K for warranty and its had just south of $13K in warranty covered repairs since then. No way would I own this car without a warranty.
