Sl55 Which wheels should I go for?

Ive been looking at so many wheels I've confused myself but these are what I'm thinking.

Either these BBS (custom made 20" with a step lip)

Or these D2 VS1's

Any thoughts?

I like the BBs more

HRE P40's

I am not crazy about the step rim 2 or 3 piece wheels ---too busy.

I am partial to the 030 package wheel from AMG.

Not that it means anything,

but Germany's Sport Auto magazine has consistently named the BBS LM as the world's most beautiful wheel.
I agree. And you don't see them on an SL much.
But I'm not too sure I like the sound of "custom" on that wheel. Don't think anyone can make them as high a quality as the factory (Inden wheels excluded). let us see what you choose....

both looks good, what the price difference?

Chris-W 05-07-2011 01:51 PM

Unfortunatelly its looking like BBS are having a few issues supplying the wheels as they were in big financial trouble last time I called an inquired.

The price difference is minimal $750 between the wheels. Im actually leaning more towards the D2's BUT I've been told that a step lip is MUCH stronger and less prone to bending. Can anyone confirm that?

I bought a used AMG set off a guy with an SL65 going to 20"s. Love the 2 color Original AMG wheels. And 19" wheels are enough for me. Also keeps the car all original AMG. Those old 18" turbine wheels just are too much work to keep clean. This is a heavy car. I just worry about the build quality on some of these wheel brands on my SL55..

I agree with deliman. I put 65 wheels on mine, which is Designo Graphite in color, and love them. Before you buy wheels with lots of spokes or corners I suggest you find a set and clean them about three times. Perhaps you'll feel differently, but my back gets tired. I had BBS "M" wheels on my 760Li and finally got rid of them and bought BMW 5 spoke chrome wheels. Good decision.

D2's all the way- larger type spokes match car better IMO

get some DPEs :)

rsr911 05-10-2011 09:49 PM

I prefer the BBS

_AMG_ 05-10-2011 11:06 PM

These wheels look great on the SL55.

Wheel tastes are too personal for most people. I got a lot of compliments on my Lorinsers that I'm selling in my sig, but I decided to change to something else.

D2 VS1

I think I saw those D2 wheels now come in a 2pc which makes them cheaper :y
