World's Slowest SL65

Just took my 2006 SL65 to the track last night. Best run? 12.7 @ 113 mph. Worst run? 13.4 @ 112 mph. (Both with a 2.0 60FT)

Dentsity Altitude 2000 Feet

This is from a car that used to run 11.8 @ 124 mph 18 months ago.

IAT temps were in the 120's. So it's not an intercooler issue.

I have no idea where to start looking to figure out the problem.......

Boost doesn't seem to really come on until end of 2nd gear...and then it's not much.

No codes are being thrown.

Just did some full throttle accelerations on the street. Boost doesn't hit until 4000 RPMs.

Sounds like a boost leak.

RE: Slow 65

Sounds like either a boost/vacuum leak or a bad sensor. I'd have it scanned asap via STAR to see whats going on.

Your worst nightmare...
Sounds like you may have a bad Boost pressure sensor....sits right on top of your Y pipe going there is a metal bracket that holds it. It may not code up for it sometimes. I would also look into the airboxes make sure they are not clogged up with anything, lastly pray its not a bad turbo. The airboxes have 2 sensors make sure they are good, wires are not broken etc.

If you read my original post, you'll note that I said that the IAT temps stay around 120F. Which means the intercooler is working normally. The Johnson IC pump that I just had installed is working just fine.

where are you located?

take it to a dyno and see how much power your are making and start from there.

12.7 is really really bad, but dont worry whatever is wrong with your car a proper tuner will identify it and fix it.

When was the last time you serviced your car? do you drive your car alot or is it garaged most of the time?

If it was garaged prior to taking it to the track, then the timing of the ECU did not adapt yet. This happens alot in MB cars and most people dont know about it. If this is what happened, I suggest you hit your car really hard for about 50 miles before taking it to the track. Then, turn the engine off, let it cool down and run your ET again

That sounds awful. Sorry to hear that... As mentioned check for boost leak, and did you swap out your intercooler pump? Im doing one on our SL65 maybe this weekend. The stock ones are a POS because they fail.

The intercooler pump is a Johnson pump. Installed 2 months ago.

The car is currently at the shop (Moorsepeed) in Austin. We'll see what they find.

Rich, definitely let us know what the issue was. I have no doubt you will be up and running with full power in no time.

I hope so! It's been running slow for a long time......

If I could get this car to trap the same speed as my Lambo I'd be in Heaven!

Update?

Rich,

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? My SL65 is also feeling depressingly sluggish lately. New IC pump - properly bled - no air pockets. I have to wonder if I have a boost leak or sensor issue. Knowing what you found sure would help. Thanks!

Yes, replaced intercooler and intercooler pump and did Renntech tuning. Ran 11.2 @ 129.62 mph after that........

Thanks! I've got a good IC pump and Kleemann ECU/TCU tuning. So I wonder if I have a sensor issue?

Did you also discover at one time that you had a loose air inlet clamp on the boosted side of your intake plumbing that cause a loss of boost pressure? Maybe I was thinking of a post by another forum member.

Old thread bump...

I ran my car and only got 112 traps with my RENNtech mods. In your case, we're the ICs bad?

Well, 120 is hot. Maybe you need a pump at least as strong as stock?

Oh, didnt realize thread was that old.

I measured my IATs driving around town today and they went up near 200. This is without any high speed pulls. What should IATs be normally and when doing pulls?

Depends on mods, but if youre at 200 degrees you definitely need better cooling.

Pump is first suspect. Split cooling next. HE next.

I have the RENNtech HE and pump already, but thinking the pump may be bad.

Have you wired it to run whenever the engine is on? Maybe its the solenoid that controls it could be bad. Take a pic of the pump?

If the pump is running, id check for air bubbles in the system
