source for an alternator for 2003 SL55
Any better source for an alternator for my 2003 SL55 than the stealership?

$1200 seems crazy

Alternator is less then $400 on Rock Auto.
When I needed fuel pumps for my 93 400E I found out about their great parts prices.
You should be able to get someone to put it on for less then $800.

What makes you think you need a new alt? Did you already replace voltage reg? I got my voltage reg. from NAPA, I'm guessing they could get the alt. too at a decent price.

I did the voltage reg at 6 k under warranty. Car only has 9 k on it now Dealer claims the diode pack in the alt is the problem. It's not undercharging it's over charging in a pulsing fashion. I will try another voltage reg first.

I wasn't saying that the VR is the problem in your case, but I guess it could be. I was just asking, I'm sure the whole alt can go bad too. When my VR went bad the errors would happen at first when on the gas, during high voltage. Good luck.
