Looking at a 2006 SL65, how much to do the 09+ conversion?
Hey dudes,
Looking at a few different 05-06 SL65s, have some questions.
1. Would you buy one of these ttv12's with over 40k miles or is it worth it to spend the extra $15k on a 30k mile car? For example: I found this one on ebay, wondering what a good offer would be for him?
2. Where is the best place to get the 09+ body parts? Aftermarket or direct from MB? I remember reading some people were getting a pretty significant discount direct from the dealer, would love to hear some prices.
3. If I decided to go with a black series body kit, which place makes one that is the most similar to stock?
Thanks guys!

The figure I hear is $20-$25k for install of OEM pieces.
I think OEM is the way to go. Some of the aftermarket widebody kits are just too much, and many are fiberglass or other material that just is not as durable as the OEM parts.
Unless you are planing on extensive engine mods and need to squeeze extra big tires under the car to handle the power, I'd just do a stock front end conversion with OEM parts.
As for the car on ebay, I'd see if he would take $50k with the warranty. And yes...the warranty is a must. As long as you can get a used SL65 with a warranty through a reputable company, I would not pay a premium for a low mileage car.

just my opinion, given the cost AND the hassle (your time) my choice would be to scout out a good price on a used '09 rather than modify a prior generation to look like an '09. You're eventually going to sell the SL and the modded version will most likely have less resale than the OEM.
If you enjoy the journey of modification then that's another story.

I have a 2006 SL65...but I have to agree with the guys above. Better steering and suspension on the 09...overall handling. Unless you go with a Black Series body, then an 06 would be good but it will not be cheap to do IT RIGHT. You just can't go cheap or you will regret it.
I was considering it but ended up getting a 993tt instead...

The 06 you are looking at on Ebay is a good price given the fact that everything is documented and it ALREADY HAS an extended warranty. (to add a 4 yr. platinum warranty on that car would run about 7,000.00 I basically just picked up the same car with 10,000 more miles on it and no extended warranty for the same price. I would have jumped on the one you are looking at.
