2011 SL65 & a 2018 C63s
Ok this maybe be a dumb question - do you Guys have mufflers on your SL65's?

This is the first SL65 I have seen, much less driven or owned. Ok I am a little odd, my last 3 cars I didn't test drive and this one and a 2009 HHR SS I never saw a real example - before buying them. I just did my homework and knew enough about them to make some big purchases - and was extremely happy and pleased.

Anyway my 2011 SL65 I thought was a bit on the loud side, when I drove it home. But I was told it was stock exhaust and it does have the AMG tips on the end of the tailpipes.

Now just the other day I was able to get it on a lift and look under it - and I noticed no mufflers, none. The only things I have in regards to any restriction in the exhaust system are two cat's one on each side of the engine just off the exhaust manifold itself, just under the engine. I know the less restrictive the exhaust is the quicker the turbo's can spool, been there done that with my last car. However, during my research the acceleration was described as a whoosh. There is no whoosh here - just in your face - out of my way roar. It's not bad at ideal but it does talk to you when you ask it to move down the road - which is does BTW at light speed.

This is one of those car that is sooooo easy to loose your license - but you'd look good and sound doing it.

Just wondering what if any mods were done on the exhaust from stock, I trying to get a handle on what I have here.

Also got some touch up paint, have a few nicks and rock chips to touch up and MB gives you not only the paint but clear coat touch up. I thought that was pretty cool anyway.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave...the only thing that was done to my exhaust was it was gutted (i.e. filtering material removed)...keeping the rest of exhaust intact. If you were to look under my car when it's on a lift you will just see an OEM exhaust system since the welded portion of the exhaust is on the top side of the muffler.

It has a nice rumble and a decent wail at WOT.

Thanks AMGfan, looking under my car there are no bulges to indicate any mufflers beyond the twin cats. It appears to be 3" stainless pipe all the way back to the twin out lets on each side.

I am fine with that, I love the sound.

Sounds like someone removed the mufflers and welded the OEM tips back on to me. Good for you though right

My mufflers are removed and i love the sound. It's louder than stock but much quieter than you'd expect from a relatively large displacement motor with no mufflers and no resonators. I have no regrets and will do the same if I buy another 65.

My mufflers are gone (with stock tips kept in place). Sounds fantastic!! Agree with the rest that it is less loud than most cars that would be "straight-piped" (likely due to muffling from the wastegates and turbo system in general), and arguably sounds as good or better than most aftermarket options!

I agree it sounds great especially when I fire it up in the garage. And given the less restriction the faster the turbo's can spool so it's a win/win.

Thanks,

Dave
