Tire choice - Michelin PS3's or Super Sports?

We recently switched to a '13 SL550 from our SL600 and I am getting rid of the standard Run-Flats. They seem better than the Goodyears on the BMW, but terrible nonetheless.

I am switching to the forged AMG SL65 wheels (19"/20" rears) and am contemplating between the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's or the Super Sports.

Interestingly enough, buying direct via the MB dealer gets me within the a few $ on the Super Sports and better pricing on the PS3's than Tirerack. Plus, since the PS'3 are MO tires (tires made specifically for Mercedes on either the formulation or sidewall strength?), they come with free road hazard warranty.

Overall not a bad deal. Used the PS2's which were good and was leaning towards the Super Sports. PS3's turn out to be a great price though.

Love to hear your thoughts on those tires - Any recommendations? Thanks!

Great question. I always wondered the difference.

Hmm. Was hoping for a bit more feedback. What is everybody riding on?

I have pretty much decided to go for the Super Sports. A bit cheaper and potentially longer lasting..

Since the SL63/65's don't have a spare, tire fix kit or a pump I was thinking of using the Continental tire fix kit.

I have the Michelin SS and find them very hard in the winter when temps get below 40 degrees. Good stick in summer though. I'll be looking for a new set come the summer.

PS2's on my SL63 and moving to Supersports on my S Class

I have PS2's on my SL63 and with the limited driving I've done since purchasing it, I quite like them.

I just recently installed Michelin Sport Plus AS on my S Class for winter driving, and they've made it feel brand new again. Had been using Pirelli winter tires (awful) and Continental ExtremeContact DW's for summer driving (will never buy them again). Planning on moving to SuperSports for summer driving again over the next 6 weeks.

I've been reading the reviews on Tire Rack as well, and overall ratings for SuperSports are favourable to the PS3's, although taking that with a grain of salt as the continental's were very highly rated and I couldn't stand them. Although the traction was really good on them, they were incredibly loud and I found the sidewalls a bit soft. Maybe I just got a bum set, but they were the worst tires I've ever owned. The OEM Bridgestone's were way better than the continental's as well.

Good point - How about these?

Well, we have snow on the ground for 4plus months a year, so that is a consideration.
We used to store the convertible during the winter, but have changed to using the cars all year long (using Bridgestone LM60's).

Maybe it's an option to look at the Continental ExtremeContact DWS or Potenza RE970AS.

Anyone have any feedback on those?

I just replaced extremecontact dws and will never buy them again. On the positive side they were ok in the winter, but I found them very loud and not very stable. I much prefer the Michelin sport plus all seasons. Good traction, stability and they are very quiet.

There was a thread about this a while back on M5Board, and it seemed that generally, the PSSs were better than the PS3s. Although neither is a bad tire.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Given our weather I was seriously contemplating getting all season tires, but am glad I didn't!

Ended up with the Pilot SuperSports on 20" rears and 19" fronts. Traction is fantastic.

I am just impressed with the new SL now that I am pushing it a little bit. Even though this is "just" the SL550, it is faster than our old SL600 and SL55.

Will have to do some testing/measuring, but I'd say that it's a hair over 4 sec. to 60
