SL65 in the 10 second club at Maple Grove

This week the SL65 finally lit up the 10's at Maple Grove with an ET of 10.927. Thanks to CBTuning.net, OETuning and SpeeDriven for their contributions. Next question .....is it time to retire the car or go for more??? Video Link:

Impressive. Nice run, but turn off the Van Halen and concentrate on the tree. No wonder you were left at the starting line.

This reaction time was a little better(even with the VanHalen-it inspires me...LOL) but a little slower overall run. Then it was time to pack it up and go home.

Maple Grove Raceway 04/15/13 ET 11.009 Run - YouTube

Nice work beating the old Vette. I appreciate the old cars, but I do get a kick out of when the big old iron does long smokey burnouts and makes tons of noise, but gets beaten by the (relatively) quite street car that was driven to the track.

My dad is a 60s guy and I tease him about his generation cars that are trailed in, with open exhaust, fuel cells, race slicks, making tons of noise that run high 10s and get beaten by new cars that were driven in, are on street tires, full interiors, with GPS, and air conditioning.

128+mph trap is good... What was D/A & outside weather temps? Last what'd you put down on Dyno? (I kno Traps best indicator, but I'm just curious)

DA was -331 ft, temp was about 54 degrees at the time of the run. We never got a final Dyno run because the Dyno shop closed its doors. A new Dyno shop is opening but we won't be comparing apples to apples.

I was talking with the owner of the Vette while we were in line. He was telling me how uncomfortable the car was to drive. He bought it from a woman who thought it would make a good daily driver because she liked vintage cars. After 6 months she sold it to him because it was such a beast to drive with no power steering or any other creature comforts that most of us have become used to....I can guarantee the vette didn't have a factory CD player in the dash...LOL

Those old 60s Corvettes are terrible at everything except looking good. Small, bad mileage, cramped, slow, handle like **** and stop like ****.

But damn they look nice in the garage all waxed down

Nice runs in the 65, I definitely think you should retire it.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. We have reached our goal to break into the 10's so I think it is time to hang up the drag radials and put the SL out to stud. It's been lots of fun and a great learning experience!

Congratulations!!! Nice looking car(color). Great MPH as well. I know the feeling of wanting to retire the car from the track, I'm in a similar position. Well enjoy the warm months with the drop top and re think in the fall with the cooler weather. If you do go back, launch the car around 2500 rpms you'll pick up some decent time.

Thanks Jeremy......and the results are well deserved by you for your hard work in developing this tune. Hope to see you again on your next trip to the east coast.

Yes, dragging this car almost seems like a sin.....it's too nice and I feel like I am abusing it with the brutal launches. We did try launches at around 2000rpm's but I seemed to get a lot of clutch slippage and the car felt like it coasted off the line instead of a more abrupt "jumping" off the line. We considered a 3000rpm torque converter but passed on the idea for now. So, for now the car is retired but I am not selling my drag setup. Maybe the car will be like some of the old rock bands who have done 5 different final tours over the last 20 years only to come out of retirement and do yet another tour.

Nice Rock band analogy, well understood. I didn't have that problem even launching over 2,000 rpms . I did hear of the roll bar popping up on hard launches with the SL's though. When I ran last, I would put the car in manual and let it shift on its own at red line. I have a delimited torque TCU which may help prevent what you may have experienced...If not I guess every tune handles things differently. I was able to have four 1.5x 60 ft times my last time out and I don't think I'd see those without launching from a higher rpm. Regardless I dropped my car off for detailing and I'm not looking to cover it with rubber anytime soon.....then again the Stones are going on tour yet again after 50 years.
