Thanks for your input. Mercedes changed a few things in 2007 for SL55's, including the brakes. They went to the two-piece rotors with 6 piston calipers, same as on the CLS63, C63, etc. The $900 price for each rotor is from Ebay... dealer price they are $1000+ each.

Usually two piece rotors are for any stock 65s or any AMG with P030 package unless mercedes recently decided to have all their rotors two piece now, but I haven't heard any other AMG owners complain about cost of brakes other than the 65 and P030 owners

Here's a post from 2006 about the "facelift" in 2007
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...-released.html
Newly developed AMG high-performance composite brakes
The SL 55 AMG is equipped with newly developed AMG high-performance brakes which ensure optimum metering of braking power, extremely short stopping distances and even better resistance to fading. Large, internally ventilated and perforated composite brake discs with six-piston aluminium fixed callipers are fitted at the front wheels, while the rear wheels are slowed down by internally ventilated and perforated discs with four-piston fixed callipers.

"Regular" brakes are 360mm two piece. 030 brakes are 390mm two piece

I've owned an SL55 and SL600. I also have had some time behind the wheel of my friends E60 M5 and also driven an M6.
In my opinion, the SMG gearobx in an M3 works, but the jerkeyness is out of place in an M5 or M6.
It's a similar situation with the V10. The race designed engine makes 500hp but only 360 lbs/ft of torque. A car that weighs 4,000 + pounds needs more torque (in my opinion).
I honestly wasn't blown away by either the M5 or M6 for handling either.
yes, the engine sound is great and the car is still fast, but I just don't understand putting a high revving low torque engine and a jerky gearbox in a 4,000 pound car that is supposed to be a luxury GT. It's a CONFUSED car in my opinion. Too heavy and big to be a sports car and too high strung to be a luxury GT.
The SL55 on the other hand is not confused. It is a luxury coupe/convertible with ridiculous power. It floats until you hit the gas and then it shoots forward like a missile.
A SL will never win any handling awards, but the complex ABC system does a decent job of making the SL feel a bit lighter then it really is.
Best of all is the earth shattering power from that supercharged V8. And that rumble!!!!! But despite the rumble from the exhaust, you can still hear the whine of the supercharger! Sure that BMW v10 sounds great, but so does the AMG!
I'm biased. I've owned two SL's and I miss them both. But I'd buy another when the right time comes. I don't know that I'd buy an M5 or M6.

That's been beaten to death here in quite a few threads but...
I bought my SL600 after a long search for another SL55. I couldn't turn down the SL600 deal because it had a warranty and mods included in the price.
Stock, the SL600 is boring compared to the SL55. It may be faster, but it is so quiet. It's obvious that Mercedes designed the stock SL600 for the luxury buyer and tried very hard not to upset the SL55/SL65 market. I drove a stock SL600 before finding my modded SL600 and it was almost silent on acceleration.
Simply cutting off the mufflers on the SL600 gives it an SL65 type rumble and simply adding a tune gives the car SL65 type power. My car had both a tune and muffler delete mods.
Video of my exhaust here:
At first I missed my SL55. I missed that awesome engine note. That V8 rumble with the supercharger whine as I mentioned above is absolutely intoxicating. Perhaps one of my favorite engine notes of all time. I think the V12 bi-turbo cars sound more like trucks.
See video here of the sound difference (not my video):
I also missed the power delivery of the SL55. While my SL600 with software was definitely faster (I put 669 flbs/ft of torque to the rear wheels on the dyno), the power from the bi-turbo V12 comes on instantly. You never feel the build in power and there is not much drama. The only indication you are going fast is the speedometer rising at an almost unrealistic rate while your peripheral view turns into a blur.
The SL55 on the other hand had a violent power delivery. The power from the supercharged V8 comes on quick, but not quite instantly so you still feel the power build and the wall of torque hits you in the back of the neck like a brick wrapped in luxurious nappa leather.
So even though the SL600 was faster, I first missed the power delivery and sound of my SL55.
However as I drove the car more and more, I began to really appreciate the engineering marvel that is the bi-turbo V12. The 600 DEFINITELY got more attention (good and bad). I never once lost a race in the SL600. I destroyed many cars. Nothing could keep up.
I'd buy either one again. In fact I'm always looking. But I want one with an extended warranty in place and for a reasonable price. That type of deal is hard to come by. The first deal that pops up, I will jump on. SL55 or SL600. Both are excellent.
