Hartge M5 vs SL55 - post from Bmwm5 board...

Just couldnt let it go....Is that possible...i think that's BULLLLShiAT even tho SL55 weights alot it should've kill the BMW no? Please comment on that!

"I was getting back from the gym, when I saw this beuatiful black SL55, cruising around 70 KPH, I was in my HARTGE M5, 460 BHP.. I went up beside him and he looked at me and slowed down, so I slowed down until we reached 30 KPH.. 1.2.3.GO!!.. at first I was infront maybe two cars.. and it kept that way until 180 then he started to get closer to one car.. then at 250 I started to get far ahead of him.. I guess he had a speed limiter or something.. but overall I killed him!!"

Sounds like the guy was in winter mode. M5 and SL55 are very similar in weight all the torque of that AMG engine would have kept pushing that car harder and faster than any N/A M5 is possible off.

Besides that the S/C AMG engines have beatiful top end speed. Wind resistance is not a factor

Next years M5 - V10 500BHP model should be closer

Having seen the latest of Chris Banges controversial designs I was pleasantly surpised. IMHO It looks better in the flesh than on paper so I have put down my deposit!

Too Young To Drive
Actually according to the latest rumours from M5board.com, the M5 had been delayed to Geneva as BMW will be upping the motor to 550-ish HP. The 500NM of torque as intially speculated will remain the same, although the motor will have a stunningly flat torque curve. Couple that with a 9000RPM rev limit and you'll have one helluva screamer.

Not a lot of torque, but gearing can compensate.

definitely with the torque advantage, i'm sure the sl55 should have walked on the car over 100mph.....unless the gearing of the m5 is changed. i however disagree with your comment about the wind resistance playing a factor. wind resistance has an exponential relation to the velocity

[.5*(air density)*Coef of Drag* Frontal Area* Velocity^2] = Force required to maintain constant velocity.

so as the velocity increases, the force required increases drastically......i.e. at lower speeds, wind resistance does not take into effect, more so the rolling and running resistance (mass dependent). around highway speeds, wind resistance takes into effect while rolling resistance remains constant.

The e55 has a very low coeff. of drag of .26 and the SL55 has a coeff. of .30 (top up). Although the sl is a beast off the line w/ it's fatter tires, higher weight loading of the rear, and shorter gearing, the e55 starts to shine on the expressway, hence the faster acceleration at higher speeds with a higher top speed (unlimited).

One of the car magazines tested the F150 lightning, that was drag limited at 145......althought it has 380 hp and 450 ft-lb.

about the m5....it has a coefficient of drag of .31, close to the sl55. I'm not sure of the frontal area of both vehicles so lets say they are the same, the torque of the sl55 should walk the m5 at high speeds.

sorry about the long boring post. just trying to wake up here

I didn't mean not a factor literally :-p

You are right about the wind resistance but from my memory the M5 has a cD of 0.34.

Regardless with different gearing or not the SL should have one that race unless the owner backed off or was in winter mode

I was going by what BMW had on their website...

Most car companies overstate their specs and BMW is a prime example of that so I'd go with the BMW numbers more than anyone elses.

yeah, if the .34 was on their site, then i'd go for that... i couldn't find the spec sheet on the e39 m5. perhaps i wasen't looking hard enough
