04 SL55 Black
I've joined the club

I picked up an 04 SL55 last week, after coveting one for quite a while. The car is Black with the Ash/Dark Ash interior, and the dark wood trim. It has no options! Dealer (Smythe European) claimed that it was a bonus car that they received directly from MB, and since it did not match any on order they offered it on a first come first serve basis. I paid MSRP. Interestingly, the used car department had an 04 in Silver with alum trim and the panorama roof. They wanted $10k over MSRP, and said that since they bought it on the open market, they were allowed to sell above MSRP. My choice was easy...

I was surprised that it was available, are others now seeing cars like this for sale?

After reading BlueSL's posts about the brakes I was wary, but the pedal feel is not that different and easy to get used to. I find I'm able to stop without lurching, but have not really tried a hard stop as I'm still in the break in period.

I am curious what ash/dark ash looks like. Mine is charcoal/charcoal...

Thanks.

04 SL55 Black
Dark Ash is more of a medium gray color, and is lighter than charcoal. It is used on the upper surface of the dashboard and on the doors. It provides less contrast with the ash leather (which is a light gray) compared to charcoal. The dark ash color is too light in my opinion, as I can see the dash reflected in the windshield when driving. I would prefer the darker charcoal dashboard, but I didn't have a choice......

I can't attach a photo to the post, but if you go to ebay, this car for sale has the dark ash/ash combination.

Thanks, it's too bad they don't have charcoal/ash like in the old AMG cars.
