SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Code clearer?

Code clearer?
I threw a misfire on cyl 10 the other day. I have a simple code reader/clearer but I don't think it interfaces well with the SL since after doing the "erase MIL" function it doesn't clear the code or the light. So may it's just too cheap or too old.
I don't think I have a constant misfire (instantaneous after clearing the code) since the car is performing as good as it did before the CEL. And I don't think it's the coil packs since they were replaced a year ago. No engine tunes either. So maybe I have a plug going bad or it's just a fluke.
What are you guys using to clear? I've also thought about getting a Star Diagnostics unit, but I fear the cheap chinese units bricking my car's computers and other units. Then I'd really be screwed. But a Star unit would be nice.
