Mercedes have always made good gear boxes. The SL55 had a auto box and
besides buttons and later paddles it remained an auto box. When they launched the first SL63 it had a MCT gearbox, and it is superb, I was told
the reason it did not have turbos or superchargers was the MCT gearbox
could not take huge amounts of torque. When I got the SL63 bi-turbo I
presumed it had a MCT gearbox, and yet it did not change as well as the nat
*** 63. What about the black edition, what gearbox does it have, surely it
can't have an auto box.

All SL63s have the Mercedes-Benz 7G Tronic automatic gearbox, the same automatic that is in just about every single Mercedes these days.

The AMG Speedshift MCT is that same transmission used pre-2009 but instead of a torque converter, it has a wet clutch which changes the way the vehicle feels when starting off the line and it also allows computer-controlled declutching during downshifts so you can have those awesome throttle blips. The MCT also allowed AMG to program Race Start launch control on these cars. With the wet clutch, I believe shift times were improved compared to earlier 7G tronic transmissions with the torque converter.

So all Mercedes have 7 speed G tronic gearboxes, does this have a torque
converter or is it a MCT type box.
What gearbox does the Black have.
