Sound options for older SLs
My favorite thing to listen to while driving is the sound of my engine and exhaust, especially with the top down or at least windows down. I don't really like all the wind noise at freeway speeds so I put the windows and top up. I then listen to CDs mostly. On long drives, I will plug my Ipod into the aux port in the glove box. The problem with the aux port is no control. I have to reach in the glove box and fiddle with the Ipod. The problem with my CD player, is I guess it is just getting old. It skips at times even with store bought CDs let alone burned CDs. I have used the CD disk cleaners with some success, but limited.
If I could get my CD player to work without skipping again I would probably be happy. Even better would be an Ipod that I could control from my existing front end. I am not too keen on a complete front end change out.
I am curious as to what others are doing as far as music mods and options.

You don't need to open the glove box when using the mp3 player.
I'm using an Sony Walkman NWZ-ZX1, and if you put the cable in the upper left corner of the glove box, you can close it, and use your mp3 player with an holder.

Just be a little careful, I did it probably 50 times last summer without any problems.
It takes a little more power to close, but it works, just put it below the opening button.
It's a little tricky the first few times, but you'll get the hang of it really fast.

When I had my 2005 SL600 I listened mostly to Satellite radio, otherwise I listened to CD's. The iPhone was just too inconvenient. Plus the sound quality of a CD was noticeably better than Satellite radio. It is surprising that both the single play CD slot and the CD changer have developed problems. It sounds like you have a 2003 or 2004 with the Aux jack, it was eliminated on the 2005. Or does yours not have both a changer and a single play slot?
For info, the 2009 was the first SL with the hard disc based system so on my 2009 SL600 I can play the music from the iPhone with it docked in the console using the steering wheel controls. Unfortunately that is a really expensive music fix. Much cheaper to have the CD player repaired. The mounting solution described above is also a great solution. I have seen several SL's with this, it seems to work just fine.

^ I am a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I never really looked to see if my unit had a single cd slot as well. I will pop a CD in and see what happens. I guess I was thinking it was for Navi like my ML. My SL doesn't have Nav.
Frankly, I find myself listening to the same CD over and over again so if the single CD slot works fine, I am good. It is not like I daily drive the SL or anything.

I thought all SL55's delivered in the U.S. had the Nav system. In the 03 and 04 models it was a CD based system, the DVD system was first used in 05 on the SL. It would be in the left side of the trunk if it works the same as the 05. I never used the earlier CD based Nav so I could be wrong about its location.
