Dealership wants to replace SAM-but everything works?

Well crud, came out from a restaurant-no crank, no start. Called MB and had it towed in. Tech wanted to replace front right SAM and starter. I only approved the starter and it turned out to be just the solenoid on the starter, but you can't just buy the solenoid. SAM failed self diagnosis after starter replacement, but we can not find anything that is not working. Tech said he could not tell why the SAM failed self diagnosis. Does this sound correct?

Yeah, that sounds about right. DAS doesn't tell why it fails, just that it did. Another thing DAS does is to say that unless the customer is complaining about something not working, the SAM should not be changed out.

If you don't have any problems I would let it be.

that will randomly happen. It might fail self diagnostic one try and 5 minutes later work fine. I've had this happen with several modules randomly not communicating from time to time. It is totally normal. As sgaar says if there isn't anything wrong don't change it.

Careful. The right front SAM controls lots of things that I can't list. Mine was replaced shortly after I bought mine (on warranty) and it ran better afterwards. They are so easy to replace but need to be programmed to your car so the stealer or someone with STAR.

You will not pass emissions with a dead SAM or so I was told.
